🚌 Getting There and Around
From Bangkok, take a minivan from Mo Chit Bus Terminal (2 hours, 150 THB) or a train from Thonburi Station (3 hours, 100 THB) to Kanchanaburi. Once in town, songthaews (shared trucks) cost 20-30 THB for short hops, while renting a scooter for 250 THB per day gives you the most flexibility. For day trips to Erawan Falls or Hellfire Pass, book a shared songthaew or join a tour (500-800 THB per person).

🏞️ Day 1: River Kwai and Town
Start at the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre (9:00 AM, 160 THB) to understand the Death Railway's history. Then walk across the Bridge over the River Kwai (free) and take the 11:30 AM train to Tham Krasae (100 THB, 1 hour) for cliffside views. After lunch at Keeree Tara (mains 120-200 THB), visit the Kanchanaburi War Cemetery (free, open daily) and end with a sunset river cruise (300 THB, 1.5 hours).

πŸ’¦ Day 2: Erawan Falls Adventure
Leave at 7:00 AM by songthaew or tour to Erawan National Park (1.5 hours, 300 THB entry). Hike to the seventh tier of the falls (2 hours round trip) and swim in the emerald pools. Have lunch at the park's food stalls (50-100 THB) before returning to town by 4:00 PM. In the evening, relax at a riverside restaurant like Blue Rice (mains 150-250 THB).

πŸš‚ Day 3: Hellfire Pass and Sai Yok
Take a morning songthaew to Hellfire Pass (1.5 hours, 200 THB entry) and walk the 4 km memorial trail. Continue to Sai Yok Noi Falls (free) for a picnic lunch, then ride the Death Railway train from Nam Tok to Tham Krasae (100 THB, 30 minutes). Return to Kanchanaburi by 6:00 PM for dinner at the Night Market (dishes 40-80 THB).

🍜 Where to Eat
For breakfast, try khao tom (rice soup) at the morning market near the bus station (30-50 THB, 6:00-9:00 AM). Lunch spots include Keeree Tara (River Kwai Road, 10:00 AM-10:00 PM) and On's Thai Issan (mains 80-150 THB, 11:00 AM-9:00 PM). Dinner at the Night Market (5:00-11:00 PM) offers grilled fish and pad Thai for under 100 THB.

🏨 Where to Stay
Budget guesthouses cluster around Maenam Kwai Road, with rooms from 400 THB per night. Mid-range riverside resorts like Bamboo House (1,200 THB) offer floating rooms and pools. For luxury, The FloatHouse River Kwai (4,000 THB) provides private villas with direct river access.

πŸ’° Costs and Money Tips
Expect to spend 1,200-2,000 THB per day including accommodation, meals, and transport. Carry cash, as many places do not accept cards, but ATMs are available near the bus station (220 THB fee). Entrance fees for major sites like Erawan Falls (300 THB) and Hellfire Pass (200 THB) are separate.

πŸ“… Best Time to Visit
The cool season from November to February offers pleasant temperatures (20-30Β°C) and is ideal for hiking. Avoid March to May when temperatures soar above 35Β°C, and be prepared for occasional rain from June to October. Weekdays are less crowded at Erawan Falls and the Death Railway.

good guide but one thing nobody mentions is the nam tok train timing. everyone talks about the tham krasae run from kanchanaburi but the sai yok section is the better ride imo, the wooden trestle at tham krasae gets packed with tour groups by 11am so go early or skip it. if ur doing hellfire pass, rent a scooter instead of the songthaew, the road out there via route 323 is fine and u can stop at the sai yok noi falls on ur own schedule, no waiting around for other people

also the night market near the bus station is decent but the one by the train station has better grilled fish, cheaper too

Nice to see a guide that actually includes Nam Tok and Sai Yok instead of pretending the Death Railway ends at the bridge. One thing I'd flag on the train: the Kanchanaburi to Nam Tok service only has a couple of departures a day, and the return leg back to town leaves Nam Tok mid-afternoon, so if you linger at Hellfire Pass you can easily miss it and end up haggling for a songthaew back. I usually tell people to do Hellfire Pass first thing and save the train ride for the way back.

On Erawan, the seven-tier hike is worth it but most people quit at tier four, which is honestly where the best swimming is anyway. The upper tiers get crowded with tour groups by late morning, so going on a weekday like the guide suggests makes a real difference.

For food, On's Thai Issan is a solid pick but the laab there leans properly spicy, so ask for mai phet if you're not used to it.

the detail about songthaews at 20-30 THB is about right but nobody warns you they stop running around 6pm. if you're at the night market past that you're walking or paying a motorbike taxi 100 THB back to Maenam Kwai Road.

one thing the guide skips is the zipline place near Erawan, Jungle Rafts area. not for everyone but if you've got a spare afternoon it's a fun break from temples and war history.

for accommodation, the floating rooms on the river are worth the extra cash even just one night. Bamboo House is fine but check if your room actually floats or if it's just riverfront, some listings blur that line.

πŸŒ‰ Bridge on the River Kwai
The iconic bridge is best visited early morning (before 9 AM) to avoid crowds and heat. Walk across the bridge for free, but be mindful of the occasional train that still crosses. The adjacent war museum and cemetery offer historical context, with entry fees around 40 THB for the museum. For a unique experience, take the train from Kanchanaburi station to Nam Tok, crossing the bridge and the famous wooden viaduct.

πŸš‚ Death Railway Train Ride
Ride the historic Burma Railway from Kanchanaburi to Nam Tok (about 2 hours) for stunning views of the River Kwai and the Wampo Viaduct. Trains depart at 6:07 AM and 10:35 AM from Kanchanaburi station; tickets cost 100 THB for foreigners. Sit on the right side for the best scenery. The ride is a moving tribute to the POWs who built the railway during WWII.

πŸ•―οΈ War Cemeteries and Museums
The Kanchanaburi War Cemetery (Don Rak) is a solemn, beautifully maintained site with nearly 7,000 graves, open daily from 7 AM to 6 PM, free entry. The Thailand-Burma Railway Centre (TBRC) nearby charges 160 THB for adults and provides excellent context. For a more personal experience, visit the Chungkai War Cemetery, located about 2 km from town, which is quieter and equally moving.

🏞️ Erawan National Park
Erawan Falls, a seven-tiered waterfall with emerald pools, is a must-do. It's 65 km from Kanchanaburi town; take a local bus from the bus station (50 THB, 1.5 hours) or a songthaew. Entry is 300 THB for foreigners. Go early to avoid crowds and wear sturdy shoes for the steep climb. The upper tiers are less crowded and perfect for a swim.

πŸ›Ά River Kwai Activities
Take a long-tail boat tour on the River Kwai to see the bridge from the water and visit floating restaurants. Many guesthouses offer boat trips to the nearby Karen village and elephant camps. For a relaxing afternoon, rent a kayak (about 200 THB per hour) and paddle along the river. Sunset cruises are also popular, with prices starting around 500 THB per person.

πŸ• Temples and Caves
Wat Tham Sua (Tiger Cave Temple) features a massive golden Buddha and a challenging 18-level climb with panoramic views. It's about 15 km from town; songthaews go there for 50 THB. Another gem is Wat Tham Khao Pun, a cave temple with stalactites and a reclining Buddha. Both are free, but donations are appreciated.

🍜 Local Food and Markets
The Kanchanaburi Night Market (near the bus station) opens daily from 5 PM to 10 PM, offering cheap and delicious Thai street food like pad Thai (40 THB) and grilled chicken. For a sit-down meal, try the floating restaurants along the river, such as Pong Phen Guesthouse, which serves authentic Thai dishes. Don't miss the local specialty, Mon cuisine, influenced by the Mon ethnic group.

🚌 Getting Around
Kanchanaburi is compact, but many attractions are spread out. Rent a motorbike (200-300 THB per day) or bicycle (50-100 THB per day) for flexibility. Songthaews (shared trucks) run along main routes for 10-20 THB. For Erawan and other far sites, book a tour or hire a private driver (around 1,500 THB per day).

Good write-up, the train timing detail about sitting on the right side is spot on. One thing I'd add is that the bridge area has a proper morning market on the town side, maybe 200 metres up from the station, where you can get khao tom and coffee from 5:30 AM before catching that 6:07 train. Way better than anything near the bridge itself, which is all tourist pricing.

For Erawan, a lot of people don't realise you have to register your water bottle at the first tier and pay a deposit, then get it stamped at each level. Sounds annoying but it keeps the pools clean and you get the money back at the bottom. Also worth knowing the seventh tier is often closed in dry season, so don't bank on making it all the way up between roughly February and April.

I'd push back slightly on the sunset cruise. Did one for 600 THB and it was fine but nothing special, you're just going up and down a fairly short stretch. Renting a kayak and paddling yourself around dusk gives you the same light for a fraction of the cost.

One thing the guide doesn't mention is that the 10:35 AM train to Nam Tok gets packed and you might end up standing, so if you want a seat on the right side, get to Kanchanaburi station by 10. I'd actually take the earlier 6:07 one, it's cooler and the light on the viaduct is better.

For Erawan, bring your own food if you can. The restaurants at the entrance are overpriced and the ones inside are limited. Also, the bus from the station drops you at the park gate but the last one back leaves around 4 PM, so plan around that or you're stuck paying for a songthaew.

One spot that gets overlooked: the JEATH War Museum near the bridge, the bamboo one. It's only 50 THB, rough around the edges, but the atmosphere is different from the polished TBRC and worth an hour.

solid writeup, covers most of it. the thing i'd add is about the songthaews to Wat Tham Sua, they dont run as often as people assume, maybe every 30 to 40 min and they stop around 5pm, so if u go late afternoon for the view u might be walking or haggling a motorbike taxi back. i usually just rent a scooter for the day, 250 baht and u can hit the tiger temple, Khao Pun cave and the Chungkai cemetery in one loop without waiting around

also on the kayak thing, the rental places near the bridge charge per hour but if u ask theyll do a half day flat rate around 500 to 600, way better value if ur just drifting and stopping at the floating spots
