UK qualified teachers salary and benefits?

Question

I'm struggling to find a pay scale for secondary teachers in Seoul.

There is a teaching opportunity at a private British school in Seoul - I know annual flights, accommodation, visa and medicals are included in the package. I have the following questions, would appreciate if you can shed some light please - - what is the general salary range - does your salary increase each year or stagnant? - are utilities usually covered by the school? - is gratuity given at the end of service? - how good is the medical coverage for expats? - do you get a relocation allowance, if so, how much? - any other benefits given that I might have missed out?

I know each school will vary, I just want to understand what is out there. Much appreciated!

For a proper British international school in Seoul, you're probably looking at a base salary between 45 and 60 million KRW per year for a qualified teacher with a few years of experience. The salary usually steps up annually by about 2-4 million won, though some schools freeze it after a certain point. Utilities are almost always included when they say accommodation is covered, but check the contract because some schools cap the amount and you'd pay the difference if you run the AC all summer.

Medical coverage is solid at these schools, typically private international insurance that covers most things with a small deductible. You'll still want to visit a clinic in Itaewon or Gangnam for English-speaking doctors, but the insurance usually handles direct billing. Relocation allowance is common, around 1-2 million won, but it's often paid as a lump sum on arrival rather than reimbursing specific receipts.

One benefit that's easy to overlook is the pension refund. If you're from a country with a totalization agreement with Korea, you can get both your and the school's pension contributions back when you leave. Also check if they offer a signing or completion bonus, some schools call it a "settling-in allowance" and it's separate from the relocation money. The gratuity thing is rare for international schools, they just pay severance as one month's salary per year worked, which is the legal requirement.

honestly the salary range people mentioned is solid but what nobody's really touched on is the tax situation. at 45-60 million won you're looking at around 16-20% income tax plus pension contributions which cuts into that number a fair bit. some schools gross up your salary to cover the tax or offer a housing allowance that's tax-free, so ask specifically about that.

for the medical coverage, the real question is whether they give you a direct billing card or make you pay upfront and claim back. most proper international schools have direct billing at places like Seoul National University Hospital or the international clinic at Samsung Medical Center in Gangnam. if they expect you to pay and wait for reimbursement that's a red flag tbh.

one benefit that slips through the cracks is tuition waivers for dependents. if you have kids most British schools in Seoul give 50-100% off tuition which is huge since fees run 30-40 million per year. also check if they cover your dependents on the medical insurance, some only cover the employee and you're stuck paying extra for family.

relocation allowance is usually a flat 1-2 million but the real money is in the flight benefit. some schools give you business class for the initial move and economy for annual trips home, others just do economy everywhere. if you're coming from Europe that's a noticeable difference in comfort.

You're right that each school varies, but the previous replies covered the main numbers well. One thing I'd add is to look closely at how the accommodation is handled. Some schools put you in their own apartment building where you're living next to other teachers, while others give you a housing allowance and let you find your own place. The allowance route is usually better because you can choose a neighborhood that suits you, like Hannam-dong or Seorae Village, where many expat teachers live.

For the medical side, Seoul has a few clinics that specifically cater to international school staff. The International Clinic at Severance Hospital in Sinchon is popular and they're used to dealing with the direct billing from these schools. It's worth asking if they have a preferred provider list, because that can save you the hassle of paperwork.

One benefit that's not always mentioned is the professional development budget. British schools in Seoul often set aside 1-2 million won per year for things like conferences or further qualifications. It's not a huge amount but it's nice to have for something like an IB workshop or a subject-specific training day.

The 45-60 million range is about right, but you should push for the higher end if you have QTS and a few years under your belt. British schools in Seoul like Dulwich College or North London Collegiate tend to pay more than the smaller ones, so factor that in when you're negotiating.

Utilities are usually covered up to a set limit, but I've known teachers get stung with a big bill in July and August because the school's monthly allowance doesn't stretch far with the AC running nonstop. Ask them to show you last year's average usage for the apartment they're offering, it gives you a real number to work with.

Medical coverage at these schools is generally good, but check if it includes dental and vision separately. Some plans only cover basic checkups and leave you paying out of pocket for anything more than a cleaning or an eye test.

One thing people forget is the severance. Under Korean labor law you get one month's salary per year worked, but some international schools try to structure it differently. Make sure it's clearly stated in the contract as a separate payout, not wrapped into your monthly salary.
