Secundaria Memories?

Question

I'm going to visit my sister in @Cancun next month, and she told me she went to Secundaria Federal Juan de la Barrera. She says it's got this crazy mural on the side, supposedly, it's famous, but she never really got a good look at it because she was always rushing to class. Does anyone know if it's still there, and if it's worth seeking out? It's supposed to be some amazing piece of local art, and I'm into that kind of thing. Really hoping to check it out if it's still around...

the mural's on the calle 51 side but tbh the better move is to walk the whole block around the school, there's a couple smaller pieces on the back wall by the cancha that nobody mentions. centro's full of stuff like that, the faded stuff near parque de las palapas too. if ur sis is still around ask her about the old mercado 28 murals, some of those got painted over but a few survived

Juan de la Barrera is on Calle 51 near Av Yaxchilan, and honestly the mural is best seen from across the street, not up close. If your sister was rushing she prob never noticed it faces the sidewalk on the south side, so you get the full thing only from the opposite corner. Pair it with a walk down to Parque de las Palapas after, the whole area has that same old Cancun feel.

heads up that Calle 51 spot gets full sun after like 10am so the colors wash out bad in photos. go early or on a cloudy day if you actually wanna shoot it. also fwiw the school shares a wall with a tortillería on the corner, easy to miss the entrance if you're looking for a big gate. ask your sister if she remembers the maestro de artes who ran the taller there, he's the one who got students to repaint parts of it years back.

yeah the mural is still there, on the Calle 51 side of the school. its by a local artist named Jorge who did a bunch of the older street pieces around centro back in the 90s, kind of faded now but thats part of the charm honestly. worth a look if you're already in the area but dont make a special trip, its a school wall not a gallery. mornings before 7 are best, no kids blocking the view.
