Sion East Mysteries?

Question

I'm heading to Sion East next week, planning a little exploration of the area. I've heard whispers of hidden lanes and old temples tucked away from the main roads, the kind of places only locals know. Anyone got any tips on finding those less-touristy spots? Maybe even some stories about the place? I'm particularly interested in the history, apparently Sion has a really rich one. I'm hoping to avoid the usual tourist traps and find something genuinely unique.

check out the area around Sion Talao if you get a chance. the tank itself is nothing special now but the older Marathi families living around it have been there for generations, and they'll point you toward a couple of tiny Hanuman and Devi shrines wedged between the chawls that don't show up anywhere online. some of the buildings still have the old wada gateways with carved wooden doors if you look up. go on a weekday evening when the kids are playing cricket in the lanes, it feels like a different city from the station road chaos

theres a whole layer of Sion East people miss because they stick to the station road. walk down towards the Dharavi end, past the market, and you'll hit pockets of old East Indian gaothans where the houses still have those sloping Mangalore tile roofs. the area was basically a cluster of villages before the mills came, and some of the old well shrines (people call them pyaavs) are still tucked between buildings. imo the best time is early sunday when the fisherfolk from the nearby koliwada are heading out, the whole place feels different.

if you're into the history angle, look for the old British-era cemetery off the road behind Sion hospital. its easy to miss, just a wall and a gate, but the headstones go back to the 1800s and some are for soldiers and East India Company folks. the caretaker there knows a lot if you catch him in the morning. also the area around Sion fort itself is worth an hour, the ruins are small but the view over the creek from the top is something most people never bother with.

Sion's history goes back further than most people realise, the name likely comes from 'Sion' or 'Shiv', and there's a Portuguese-era church, Our Lady of Health, up on a hillock near the station that most visitors walk right past. For the older stuff, head into the lanes off Sion East's Kumbharwada side, there's a Ganesh temple that's been there for centuries and the surrounding wada-style buildings still have that old village feel. If you go on a weekday morning you'll mostly have it to yourself, and the chai wallah near the temple gate has been there for decades, he'll tell you stories if you ask nicely.
