**🗺️ Arrival and Orientation** Xiaoyi is served by the Xiaoyi Railway Station, with high-speed trains from Taiyuan taking about 40 minutes and from Beijing around 3 hours. From the station, taxis to the city center cost about 15 to 20 yuan and take 15 minutes. Start your trip by checking into a hotel near Fuxi Street, where many budget options cluster around 150 to 300 yuan per night. Pick up a local map at the visitor center on Yingbin Road, open daily from 8:30 AM to 5:30 PM. **🏛️ Day 1 Morning: Old Town** Begin at the Xiaoyi Old Town on Fuxi Street, a restored Ming and Qing dynasty commercial area that opens at 8:00 AM. Wander through the ancient shops and temples, including the Confucian Temple and the City God Temple, both free to enter. Allow two hours here, then walk five minutes to the Xiaoyi Museum on Fuxi South Road, which charges 20 yuan and displays local artifacts from the Han to Qing dynasties. The museum is closed on Mondays, so plan accordingly. **🍜 Day 1 Afternoon: Local Flavors** For lunch, try the hand-pulled noodles at Lao Zhang Noodle House on Jiefang Street, a bowl costs around 15 yuan and the shop is open from 10:30 AM to 2:00 PM. After eating, head to the Xiaoyi Wetland Park on the Fen River, a 10-minute taxi ride from the old town for about 10 yuan. The park is free and perfect for a leisurely walk; rent a bike for 20 yuan per hour to cover more ground. In the late afternoon, visit the night market on Xinjian Road, which starts setting up around 5:00 PM. **🚌 Day 2 Morning: Day Trip** Take a 30-minute bus from Xiaoyi Bus Station to the nearby Zhangbi Ancient Castle, a fascinating underground fortress. Buses depart every 30 minutes from 7:00 AM to 6:00 PM and cost 8 yuan one way. The castle entrance fee is 60 yuan, and it opens at 8:00 AM. Explore the tunnels and above-ground temples for about three hours; wear comfortable shoes as there are many stairs. **🍽️ Day 2 Afternoon: Return and Relax** Return to Xiaoyi by bus and have a late lunch at the Night Market Food Street on Xinjian Road, where stalls serve grilled skewers and local pastries from 11:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Spend the afternoon at the Xiaoyi Library on Wenhua Road, a quiet spot with free Wi-Fi and air conditioning, open until 8:00 PM. For dinner, try the dumplings at Jiaozhi Wang on Fuxi Street, about 25 yuan per plate. End the day with a stroll along the Fen River promenade, which is beautifully lit after dark. **🏞️ Day 3 Morning: Nature and Culture** Start early with a trip to the Guandi Temple on Guandi Road, dedicated to the war god Guan Yu, opening at 8:00 AM with a 30 yuan entry fee. From there, take a 15-minute taxi to the Xiaoyi Botanical Garden on Binhe Road, free to enter and open from 6:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Spend two hours exploring the themed gardens and the small lake. If you have time, the nearby Xiaoyi Art Gallery on Wenhua Road showcases local artists and is free, open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. **🛍️ Day 3 Afternoon: Shopping and Departure** For souvenirs, head to the Xiaoyi Department Store on Fuxi Street, which sells local specialties like walnut cakes and vinegar from 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Have a final meal at the Old Town Restaurant on Fuxi South Road, known for its braised pork and steamed buns, around 40 yuan per person. If you are departing by train, allow 30 minutes to reach Xiaoyi Railway Station by taxi, which costs about 20 yuan. High-speed trains to Taiyuan run frequently until 9:00 PM. **💡 Practical Tips for 2026** Xiaoyi is a walkable city, but taxis are cheap and plentiful; a typical ride within the center costs 6 to 10 yuan. Most attractions accept mobile payments via WeChat Pay or Alipay, so carry little cash. The best time to visit is spring or autumn, as summers can be hot and winters cold. Learn a few basic Mandarin phrases; English is not widely spoken outside hotels.
