Another local specialty is the Xiaoyi fried cake, a sweet and savory pastry filled with red bean paste, often enjoyed as a snack. Don't miss the opportunity to try the spicy and sour soup with hand-cut noodles, a comforting dish perfect for cold days. These dishes are widely available at street stalls and small eateries throughout the city.

๐Ÿฎ Old Town Food Street
The Old Town Food Street, located near the Xiaoyi City God Temple on Fuxing Street, is a bustling hub for local snacks and street food. Open daily from 10:00 AM to 10:00 PM, it offers a variety of options such as grilled skewers, stinky tofu, and sweet rice balls. Prices are reasonable, with most snacks costing between 5 and 20 yuan. This is the perfect place to sample multiple dishes in one visit.

๐ŸฅŸ Best Breakfast Spots
Start your day with a bowl of warm soy milk and youtiao (fried dough sticks) at the breakfast stalls along Jiefang Road, open from 6:00 AM to 9:00 AM. For a heartier meal, try the steamed buns with pork filling at Lao Wang Steamed Buns, a small shop at 45 Xinhua Street, where a set of four buns costs around 8 yuan. Another favorite is the rice noodle soup at Auntie Li's, located at 12 Renmin Road, open from 6:30 AM to 10:00 AM. These spots are popular among locals, so arrive early to avoid the crowds.

๐Ÿข Street Food Delights
In the evening, the night market on Wenhua Road comes alive with sizzling skewers, fried noodles, and sweet potato balls. The market runs from 5:00 PM to midnight, and you can enjoy a satisfying meal for under 30 yuan. Must-try items include the cumin-spiced lamb skewers (3 yuan each) and the crispy fried chicken (10 yuan per portion). The atmosphere is lively, making it a great spot to experience local nightlife.

๐Ÿš Family-Run Restaurants
For a sit-down meal, head to Chunfeng Restaurant at 88 Zhongshan Road, a family-run establishment that has been serving traditional Xiaoyi cuisine for over 20 years. Their signature dish is the braised pork with chestnuts, priced at 48 yuan, and the stir-fried seasonal greens for 18 yuan. Another gem is Grandma's Kitchen at 23 Dongfeng Lane, known for its homemade dumplings and friendly service. Both places offer hearty portions and a cozy atmosphere.

๐Ÿต Tea Houses and Desserts
After a savory meal, satisfy your sweet tooth at the Sweet Corner Tea House on 56 Wenhua Road, which serves traditional Chinese desserts like red bean soup and sesame balls. A bowl of red bean soup costs 12 yuan, and the sesame balls are 8 yuan for three. The tea house is open from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM and provides a quiet retreat from the bustling streets. Pair your dessert with a pot of jasmine tea for a relaxing end to your day.

๐Ÿ’ก Practical Tips for 2026
Xiaoyi is a walkable city, but taxis are cheap and plentiful; a typical ride within the center costs 6 to 10 yuan. Most attractions accept mobile payments via WeChat Pay or Alipay, so carry little cash. The best time to visit is spring or autumn, as summers can be hot and winters cold. Learn a few basic Mandarin phrases; English is not widely spoken outside hotels.

good effort on this. one thing nobody mentions: the wetland park bike rental needs a 100 yuan deposit, cash or WeChat, so dont show up with an empty wallet. also the fen river promenade light show only runs fri and sat nights, maybe check dates before you plan around it. i visited last october and that caught me out.

went last spring & the guandi temple was closed for renovation, so call ahead before you build a morning around it

Fuxi street hotels book out for the lantern festival, so reserve early if you're coming in february.
