Hey!

I find the Barbican the perfect place to sit with my iPad or Laptop and actually get things done, but I'm looking for something similar outside of a café that's in my local area (Hillingdon, but Ealing, Hounslow, Kingston, Richmond & Hammersmith boroughs are good).

I want to cycle as opposed to the train or bus so I can start shedding weight again. I have indeed cycled from Hillingdon to the Barbican once already but I'm not prepared just yet to do that as often as I'd like to 😅

The reason why the Barbican works is because it's busy and an open space, which mimics the kind of atmosphere I'd find in an office or a café (with the distractions, albeit dialed up), so somewhere like the local library wouldn't work.

(I did try searching the history of the sub but I don't think Hillingdon gets enough love :( )

Thanks!

You could try the courtyard at Somerset House. It's a bit of a trek from Hillingdon but it's free to sit in and has that same busy-but-open vibe as the Barbican. There's a big fountain in the middle and plenty of benches, plus a cafe right there if you need a top-up.

For something closer, the Watermans Arts Centre in Brentford has a nice foyer area overlooking the Thames. It's not as grand as the Barbican but it's quiet enough to focus and busy enough to feel like you're in a workspace. The cycle route along the river from Hillingdon is pretty decent too.

the old town hall in richmond has a huge open atrium with benches and tables, feels kinda like a mini barbican but with more daylight. it's free, busy with people coming and going, and there's a cafe in the corner if you need a coffee. the cycle from hillingdon along the river is nice, maybe 40 mins depending on your pace

also worth checking out the pitzhanger manor in ealing, the courtyard is decent and they've got those long benches near the cafe. not as bustling as the barbican but has that public square energy without being a library

What are some innovative ways to anonymously compare rental prices in a city?

I'm looking for methods or platforms that allow residents to anonymously share and compare rental prices in their area. What options exist for this purpose? SpareRoom's "rooms wanted" ads are underrated for this. people post what they're currently paying alongside what they want next, so you can scrape a rough sense of going rates by postcode without anyone knowing you looked. it skews young and flatshare heavy tho, so not much use if you're after 2-beds in zone 2.

Another one is just the depozit or tenancy deposit scheme data. not public-facing, but your council's housing officer can tell you median rents from deposit registrations if you email them under FOI. takes weeks, but its proper anon and nobody clocks u.

Rightmove and Zoopla only show asking rents, which are often 10 to 15 percent above what a place actually goes for, so they're a poor benchmark. The trick I've used is the ONS Price Index of Private Rents, which breaks things down to borough level and is genuinely anonymous since it's aggregate data, no listing or account needed. For something more granular, the London Renters Union runs a rent reporting tool where you submit what you're paying with your postcode and it maps it against others nearby, though the coverage is patchy outside the inner boroughs.

the openrent "rent check" thing is decent for zones 3-4 where the unions tool barely reaches. also worth checking the london.gov.uk planning portal for new build applications, they list "affordable" and market rent figures per unit in the viability assessments, which is basically the developer telling the council what they expect to charge. bit of a faff to dig through but its public, anonymous & nobody knows ur looking
