🍦 Start with Maraş Dondurma
No visit to Kahramanmaraş is complete without trying its world-famous Maraş dondurma, a dense, stretchy ice cream made with salep and mastic. Head to Yaşar Pastanesi at Trabzon Bulvarı No: 45 in the city center, where a single cone costs around 30 TL and the servers put on a playful show. For a more traditional experience, try the dondurma at Kahramanmaraş Dondurma Salonu on Azerbaycan Bulvarı, open daily from 9 AM to 11 PM.

🍲 Savor Local Kebabs
Kahramanmaraş is known for its succulent kebabs, particularly the Maraş kebabı, a minced meat kebab seasoned with local red pepper. Visit Kebapçı İsmail at Atatürk Bulvarı No: 112 for a generous portion served with bulgur pilaf and salad, priced around 120 TL per person. Another favorite is Şirvan Kebap Salonu on Cumhuriyet Caddesi, where the lamb şiş kebab is grilled over charcoal and costs about 150 TL.

🌶️ Taste the Famous Peppers
Kahramanmaraş is Turkey's pepper capital, and you'll see dried red peppers hanging everywhere. Stop by the local bazaar on Uzun Çarşı Sokak to buy fresh or dried peppers, or try the spicy pepper paste at Baharatçı Ali Usta, a small shop near the Grand Mosque. A kilo of dried peppers costs around 80 TL, and many vendors offer free samples.

🥘 Try Traditional Home Cooking
For a taste of home-style cooking, head to Ev Yemekleri Lokantası on Kışla Caddesi, where daily dishes like kuru fasulye (bean stew) and pilav are served from 11 AM to 4 PM. A full plate with bread and tea costs about 50 TL. Another spot is Hanımeli Ev Yemekleri on Zübeyde Hanım Bulvarı, known for its stuffed vegetables and lentil soup, with meals averaging 60 TL.

🍢 Explore Street Food Stalls
The streets around Kahramanmaraş's central market are lined with street food stalls. Try the içli köfte (stuffed bulgur balls) at the stall on Pazarcık Caddesi, where two pieces cost 15 TL, or grab a simit from the carts near the clock tower for 5 TL. In the evening, look for the midye dolma (stuffed mussels) vendor on Trabzon Bulvarı, selling each mussel for 3 TL.

🍰 Indulge in Local Desserts
Beyond dondurma, Kahramanmaraş has a sweet tooth. Visit Tatlıcı Hacı Şakir on Atatürk Bulvarı for their famous cevizli sucuk (walnut sausage) and pestil, with a box of mixed sweets costing around 70 TL. For baklava, try Güllüoğlu Baklava on Cumhuriyet Caddesi, where a portion of pistachio baklava is about 45 TL, open from 8 AM to 10 PM.

☕ Sip Local Tea and Coffee
Take a break at Çay Bahçesi near the Kahramanmaraş Castle, where a glass of tea costs 10 TL and the view is free. For a stronger kick, try the menengiç coffee (a local wild pistachio coffee) at Menengiç Kahvesi on Uzun Çarşı Sokak, priced at 25 TL. Both spots are open daily from morning until late evening.

💰 Budget-Friendly Tips
Eating well in Kahramanmaraş is affordable. Street food and local eateries typically cost between 20 and 60 TL per person, while a sit-down kebab meal averages 100 to 150 TL. For the best value, visit the market area during lunch hours when many stalls offer discounted plates, and always carry cash as some small vendors don't accept cards.

Grab a künefe at a pastane near the otogar instead of downtown, fresher and half teh crowd.

The guide nails the dondurma, but for the pepper paste I'd skip the tourist shops and ask at the Uzun Çarşı stalls for the homemade stuff.

Solid writeup, but hit the Sunday bazaar near the bus terminal for tarhana and fresh biber salçası at prices way below the shops.

🗺️ Arrival and Orientation
Start your first day at Kahramanmaras Bus Terminal (Otogar), about 5 km north of the city center. A dolmus (minibus) to the center costs 15 TL and takes 15-20 minutes; taxis charge around 100 TL. Drop your bags at a hotel near Cumhuriyet Meydani, the main square, where most attractions are within walking distance. Pick up a city map from the tourist information office (open 9:00-17:00, closed Sundays) and confirm opening hours for the bazaar and museums.

🏛️ Day 1: Old City Core
Begin at Kahramanmaras Museum (Istiklal Caddesi, open 8:30-17:00, entry 30 TL) to see Roman mosaics and ethnographic displays. Walk 10 minutes to the Grand Mosque (Ulu Cami) and the adjacent covered bazaar (Kapali Carsi), lively from 9:00 to 19:00. Lunch at a local eatery like Kebapci Emmi (Sakarya Caddesi) for a plate of Maras kebap (around 80 TL). In the afternoon, visit the Taş Medrese (stone madrasa) and the nearby handcraft shops selling copperware and textiles.

🏰 Day 2: Castle and Panorama
Head to Kahramanmaras Castle (Kale) on the hilltop; a taxi from the center costs about 50 TL and takes 10 minutes, or you can walk up in 25 minutes. The castle is open 9:00-18:00 (entry 20 TL) and offers sweeping views of the city. After descending, explore the nearby Alemdar Mosque and the historic Arasta Bazaar. For lunch, try Sariyer Balik (Balikcilar Caddesi) for fresh trout, then relax at a tea garden in the afternoon.

🌳 Day 3: Parks and Markets
Spend the morning at the Kahramanmaras Botanical Garden (Binevler Mahallesi, open 8:00-20:00, free entry), a peaceful spot with local plant species. Then take a dolmus to the Wednesday Market (Çarşamba Pazarı) for fresh produce and spices; it runs from 7:00 to 17:00. Have lunch at a street stall serving içli köfte (stuffed bulgur balls) for about 25 TL. In the afternoon, visit the nearby city park (Şehitlik Parkı) and enjoy a final Turkish coffee before departure.

🍽️ Where to Eat
Kahramanmaras is famous for its ice cream (dondurma) and kebap. For dondurma, try Yaşar Dondurma (Cumhuriyet Meydani, open 8:00-23:00) where a cone costs 20 TL. For a full meal, Kebapci Emmi (Sakarya Caddesi) serves generous portions of Maras kebap for 80-100 TL. Budget-friendly options include the many lokantas around the bazaar, where a set meal costs around 50 TL.

🚌 Getting Around
The city center is compact and walkable, but for longer hops use dolmus (minibuses) that cost 15 TL per ride. Taxis are metered, with short trips within the center costing 40-60 TL. To reach the bus terminal, allow 20 minutes by dolmus or 15 minutes by taxi. Ride-hailing apps are not widely used, so flag down taxis or use local dolmus routes.

💰 Budget and Tips
A comfortable daily budget is around 400-600 TL per person, covering meals, transport, and entry fees. Many museums and sites accept credit cards, but carry cash for markets and small eateries. Tipping is customary (5-10% in restaurants). Learn a few Turkish phrases like 'merhaba' (hello) and 'teşekkürler' (thanks) to connect with locals.

📅 Best Time to Visit
Spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October) offer mild weather ideal for walking. Summers can be hot (30-35°C), so plan indoor activities during midday. Winters are cool but manageable, with occasional snow; check museum hours as they may shorten in low season.

Two things I'd add: the Tarhanası çorbası at the little lokantas off the bazaar, and the Maraş tarhanası itself, sold dried in bags at the spice stalls. Also the 30 TL museum entry looks low, I'd budget closer to 60.

arrow_drop_up 25 arrow_drop_down

Worth noting the otogar dolmus stops running around 21:00, so a late arrival means paying for a taxi.

arrow_drop_up 16 arrow_drop_down

decent itinerary, covers the core well. one thing i'd flag is the bus terminal dolmus timing on day 3: if ur heading out on an evening bus, build in extra slack because the minibuses thin out after dark and you dont want to be stuck. also the ice cream holds up better at the source shops up in the hills than in the center, the texture is denser when it hasnt sat in a display case all day
