๐Ÿž๏ธ Quiet Viewpoints
Skip the crowded Tiger Cave Temple and head to Khao Khanab Nam, the twin limestone peaks just north of Krabi Town. A short longtail boat ride from Chao Fah Pier (about 100 baht each way) takes you to a quiet mangrove boardwalk and cave with stalactites. Go early morning (before 9am) to avoid heat and have the place to yourself. Locals also love the viewpoint at Wat Tham Suea's lesser-known back trail, but the main draw is the peaceful river scene.

๐Ÿœ Off-Map Eateries
For authentic southern Thai food, find Krua Thara on Soi Ruamjit in Krabi Town, a no-frills spot famous for its gaeng som (sour curry) and fried fish. Lunch here costs around 60 to 100 baht per dish, and it's packed with office workers from 11:30am to 1pm. Another hidden gem is Roti Bang Niang in Ao Nang, a street cart near the mosque that serves crispy roti with banana and egg for 30 baht from 6pm to midnight.

๐ŸŒฟ Local Hangouts
Krabi's youth gather at the Krabi Riverwalk near the town's iconic crab sculpture, especially on weekend evenings. Bring a mat and join families enjoying the breeze and street food from vendors selling grilled squid and mango sticky rice. For a caffeine fix, check out Slow Bar Krabi on Maharat Road, a tiny cafe with local beans and a relaxed vibe, open daily from 8am to 5pm.

๐Ÿ–๏ธ Secret Beaches
Most tourists flock to Railay, but Had Yao (Long Beach) in Klong Muang is a quiet stretch of sand lined with casuarina trees. It's about a 30-minute drive from Ao Nang, and you can park near the Had Yao Mosque. Another hidden spot is Nopparat Thara Beach's northern end, where locals picnic under the pines and you can watch fishing boats return at sunset.

๐Ÿ›ถ Mangrove Adventures
Take a kayak tour through the Ao Thalane mangroves, about 20 minutes north of Krabi Town. Local operators like Krabi Eco Tours charge around 800 baht for a half-day trip including pickup, and you'll paddle through narrow channels and spot monkeys and kingfishers. Avoid midday heat by booking the 7am or 3pm slot. This area is far less crowded than the Phi Phi day trips.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Cultural Spots
The Krabi Cultural Street, held every Friday evening on Khong Kha Road in Krabi Town, is a market where locals sell handmade crafts and traditional snacks. Arrive around 5pm to see the opening parade and sample khanom jeen (rice noodles) with various curries for 20 baht. Also visit the Krabi Museum (free entry, open 9am to 4pm weekdays) for a quick primer on the region's history and geology.

๐ŸŒ… Sunset Secrets
Instead of the crowded Ao Nang beachfront, head to the Krabi River estuary near the Khao Khanab Nam caves for a peaceful sunset. Local fishermen often gather there, and you can buy fresh seafood from the small market at Tha Lane Pier (about 15 minutes from town) and grill it on the spot. Another favorite is the viewpoint at Phru Toh Daeng, a peat swamp forest reserve with a boardwalk and birdwatching tower, open until 6pm.

๐ŸšŒ Getting Around
Rent a scooter for 200 to 250 baht per day from shops in Krabi Town or Ao Nang; it's the best way to reach these hidden spots. Songthaews (shared trucks) run along major routes for 20 to 40 baht, but they don't go to quieter beaches. For the mangroves and Had Yao, negotiate a round-trip with a local driver for about 500 baht.

Worth adding Tha Pom Khlong Song Nam for the clear spring water, boardwalk is easy and it's dead quiet on weekdays. Only 20 min from town by scooter. Skip it on weekends tho, Thai families flood in.

๐Ÿœ Cheap Eats in Krabi
Street food stalls and local markets are your best bet for affordable meals. In Krabi Town, the weekend Walking Street market (Friday to Sunday, 5pm to 10pm) offers dishes from 30 to 60 baht. Ao Nang's local food court near the beach road serves pad thai for around 50 baht. A bowl of noodle soup at a roadside shop typically costs 40 to 50 baht.

๐Ÿ›ต Getting Around on a Budget
Songthaews (shared trucks) are the cheapest way to travel between Krabi Town and Ao Nang, costing 60 baht each way. Renting a scooter costs around 200 to 250 baht per day and gives you flexibility to explore at your own pace. For longer trips, such as to Tiger Cave Temple, a songthaew from Krabi Town costs about 50 baht.

๐Ÿ  Affordable Accommodation
Budget guesthouses in Krabi Town start at around 300 to 500 baht per night for a fan room. Ao Nang has more options from 500 to 800 baht, especially if you book in advance during low season (May to October). Hostels with dorm beds are available from 150 to 250 baht per night.

๐ŸŽŸ๏ธ Entrance Fees and Tours
Many natural attractions are free or very cheap. Tiger Cave Temple (Wat Tham Suea) is free to enter, though donations are appreciated. The Krabi Town weekend market is free to browse. Island hopping tours can be pricey, but you can save by joining a group tour (around 1,200 baht for a full day) or taking a longtail boat from Ao Nang to Railay Beach for 150 baht one way.

๐Ÿ†“ Free Things to Do
Krabi has plenty of free activities. Hike to the Krabi Town viewpoint for panoramic views, or relax on Ao Nang Beach without spending a dime. The Krabi Naga Statue and the mangrove boardwalk near Krabi Town are also free to visit. Many temples, like Wat Kaew Korawaram in Krabi Town, welcome visitors for free.

๐Ÿ’ฐ How Locals Save Money
Locals shop at fresh markets like Maharaj Market in Krabi Town for cheaper produce and ready-to-eat food. They avoid tourist-heavy restaurants and instead eat at small family-run shops. Using songthaews instead of taxis and buying SIM cards from 7-Eleven (starting at 50 baht) are common money-saving habits.

๐Ÿ“… Best Time to Save
Visiting during the green season (May to October) means lower accommodation prices and fewer crowds, though you might encounter rain. Prices for tours and activities are often negotiable during this period. Avoid peak season (December to February) when rates can double.

๐Ÿ’ง Everyday Budget Tips
Drink tap water only if boiled or filtered; otherwise, buy large bottles of water from 7-Eleven for 14 baht. Avoid ATM fees by withdrawing larger amounts at once (most ATMs charge 220 baht per withdrawal). Many restaurants add a 10% service charge, so check your bill.

nice writeup, the market food prices are spot on. one thing i'd add, the night market near the river in town (different from the walking street one) runs most evenings and the khao mok gai there is like 45 baht. also carry small bills, vendors rarely have change for a 1000 note

Tiger Cave Temple, climb before 8am.

Grab a roti from a cart near Vogue Department Store around dusk, 25 baht and better than most sit-down desserts.
