I typically rent a scooter in Bangkok for a couple months when I am here. I would buy one when I make the plunge to live here fulltime.

My question is what are your options if you breakdown, flat tire etc when your out and about in the city? Finding a shop? Can it be "towed". Just trying to find out what to do when the inevitable happens. Thanks

yeah the scooter breakdown thing is pretty chill in bangkok honestly. if it's a flat tire just find any tire shop with the big rubber sign, they're everywhere and charge like 60-80 baht to patch it. for engine trouble or electrical stuff you want to look for a shop that has a honda wing logo or a yamaha tuning fork sign, those guys know their stuff. i've had to push a dead bike about 400 meters down rama 4 before and two different people stopped to help without me even asking. the "foot on seat push" method is real and works fine for short distances but if you're far from home you can also flag down one of those little blue songthaew trucks and negotiate like 200 baht to throw your scooter in the back for a ride to a shop

one thing nobody mentioned yet - if you break down near a big intersection like asoke or phra khanong, look for the orange-vested traffic police. they usually have a list of nearby shops on their phone and will call someone for you. i had a dead battery near victory monument and a cop flagged down a mobile mechanic who came on another scooter with a battery pack, charged me 150 baht and i was gone in 10 minutes. there's also a few apps like grab bike that have a "scooter repair" option now but its hit or miss with english

fwiw if you're on a main road like sukhumvit or ratchada just push it to the nearest 7-11, the security guard or staff usually know a guy. I've had a dead battery twice and both times some random dude on a wave 125 stopped and helped push start it, that's just how it goes here. for towing there's the motorbike shop guys who'll come with a small trailer for like 100-200 baht but you gotta wait maybe 30 mins. honestly the best prep is to keep the rental shop's line saved, they've seen it all and can sort you out faster than trying to find a random shop yourself

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
