Is there someone driving a purple Lamborghini around China Town every day?
When I took a picture he stopped and I saw a thumbs up/waving through the dark tinted windows.
Who is this? Does he/she really drive around in that area all day every day? There are no ads on the car or anything signaling for me to buy/do something.
yeah that's a local character, not a marketing thing. he's been cruising yaowarat road for years, mostly late afternoon to early evening. some folks say he's a businessman who just loves the attention, others think it's a rental thing but he's always the same driver. he'll literally loop the block a few times, it's his thing. if you catch him near the old siam intersection he'll sometimes rev it for the street food crowd
the guy's name is sunan, runs a few gold shops around yaowarat. the purple lambo is wrapped, not painted, and he changes it every couple years but always goes back to purple. i've seen him near the yaowarat road arch around 7pm most nights, just cruising slow with music playing. he's genuinely friendly, once saw him let a group of tourists take turns sitting in the driver's seat while traffic was stopped near the sampaeng market entrance.
tbh the purple lambo guy is kinda legendary in the area, i've seen him cruising past the leng bua ia shrine a few times around 7pm when the food stalls are in full swing. he's not just on yaowarat either, i've spotted him once near the river city pier parking lot, just idling and letting people snap pics before heading back into the chaos.
some of the older vendors at the trok san market told me he used to be a silk trader before retiring, the car is his retirement project. no ads or anything, he just likes being a part of the scene. if you ever catch him near the chinatown gate during a festival he'll even roll down the window to chat for a sec, pretty friendly dude

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
