Was this a scam?

Now he needed to contact his mom in UK to let her know of the situation. So I asked for his mom's email and I would email her later. He doesn't know it and knows her Snapchat or Instagram. I told him I don't use those. He asked me to download it. I said he should ask someone who uses those. He said he asked me because I am the only person he saw with an iPhone (how's that relevant I don't know). I use Samsung, so I told him so. Then he says that's even better, his mom uses Samsung (again, how's that relevant). So I was suspicious and told him I can't help and left.

I can think of so many other ways for him to contact his mom than approaching strangers on the street. Ask the embassy staff? Ask your hotel's staff?

So was this an attempt to steal? To install something on my phone? Or could it have been a genuine request?

If relevant, I'm an Asian woman, could pass as a local.

you dodged a classic one. there's a whole ring of these guys working around thong lo and ekkamai too, same script every time. they target people with phones out because they want either the device itself or access to your banking apps while you're distracted. if it was genuine, he'd have walked into the 7-11 and asked the staff to use their landline or borrow a charger, not try to get you to install an app on the street

ngl this scam is super common around Sathorn and Sukhumvit, I've heard the exact same script from other tourists. The phone/passport story is a red flag because embassies literally have emergency contact procedures for this, they don't send strangers to download apps. He was prob trying to get access to your phone for banking apps or to clone something, not steal the device itself. Smart move walking away.

honestly that was 100% a scam, good instincts. the whole "i need to contact my mom" thing is an old play in bangkok, especially around sathorn and silom where they target people waiting in lines or at bus stops. the real giveaway was him pushing you to download an app - that's usually a setup for either grabbing your phone when you're distracted or sideloading something sketchy. if he genuinely needed help, the british embassy is literally on wireless road like 10 mins from there, or he could've walked into any hotel lobby and used their phone for free.

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
