The box had to contain only books - no letters or other items - and it took several months to arrive but it was dirt cheap. Does Thailand's postal system have something similar? What is it called? I want to ship two boxes of books to Italy

if you're near a post office that does it, the form is called "cp 71" for surface printed matter. they'll make you declare exactly what's inside and sometimes ask for an invoice if the value seems high. from my experience sending to france, the thai post tracking stops once it leaves thailand so don't expect updates after that. also the boxes need to be able to close flat without bulging or they might reject them, i had to repack once because the tape was making the edges uneven

one thing nobody mentioned yet - thailand post has a weight limit for surface book shipments, i think its like 20kg per box max. also they'll ask you to leave the box open so they can peek inside before sealing it, bring your own tape cause theirs costs extra. for italy specifically expect customs to be annoying on the other end, my friend sent books to rome and they held them for 3 weeks at the post office there

another thing worth knowing - thailand post has a size limit too, not just weight. the combined dimensions (length + width + height) cant exceed like 150cm or theyll charge you oversized rates which defeats the purpose. for two boxes to italy you're looking at maybe 1500-2000 baht each depending on weight, way cheaper than airmail but still not pocket change. also they'll prob make you fill out a cp72 form instead of cp71 now, they changed it a couple years back, same info just different number. if you're near on nut there's a decent thailand post branch on sukhumvit soi 77 that's never crowded, way better than the main ones

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
