Toyota Corolla's Reliability?

Everyone says they're practically indestructible, right? My uncle had one that lasted him 20 years, clocking over 300,000km before it finally gave up the ghost. But I'm a bit nervous. What are the most common, and costly, things to go wrong with these cars after a lot of mileage? I'm hoping to avoid any major repairs soon. I've heard stories... horror stories...about some unexpected maintenance bills. Any advice for a new Corolla owner, especially one with a slightly older model?

That 1ZZ-FE engine in the 2008 model is a tank, but the automatic transmission is the weak point if the previous owner skipped fluid changes. I'd check if it's had the transmission fluid drained and refilled every 60,000km or so, a lot of people ignore that and the gearbox starts slipping around 200,000km. Also, the power steering pump on these gets noisy and leaks, it's a common fix but can cost a couple thousand baht if you go to a shop on Ramkhamhaeng Soi 21 rather than the dealer. Just keep up with the oil changes and don't let the coolant go brown and you'll be fine for years.

one thing i rarely see people warn about on these is the rear wheel bearings. they start humming around 140-160k km and it sounds like a plane taking off in your back seat. a shop on sukhumvit 71 can do both sides for like 3000 baht total, way cheaper than waiting till they seize up and damage the hub. also check the trunk seal for water leaks after heavy rain, the carpet gets moldy and you dont notice till it smells musty

if you're getting a 2008 model, check if the dashboard has any cracks near the defroster vents, it's a known issue from the thai sun and not cheap to replace if u want it perfect. also the door lock actuators fail on these, one by one, so if one door doesn't lock with the remote, budget about 800 baht per door at a shop on lat phrao soi 1. honestly just drive it easy and change the oil every 5000km with decent stuff, this car will outlast your patience for owning it

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
