But I'm a total klutz when it comes to bargaining. Any tips for navigating the market without getting completely ripped off, or is it just a case of "fake it 'til you make it"? I really want to get some good quality saffron, but I'm worried I'll end up with tourist-trap saffron at inflated prices. Seriously, I need some insider knowledge!

honestly the saffron thing is tricky even for locals sometimes. the stuff in the big open bins near the front is almost always fake, i'd skip that entirely. there's a woman near the back left corner of the market, past the fabric stalls, she's been there for years and sells it in tiny glass vials with a handwritten label, that's your best bet. for bargaining just start with a smile and a number about 60% of what they say, but don't stress too hard, the spice vendors are usually less aggressive than the clothing ones

One trick that works well in Phahurat is to carry small bills. Vendors notice when you pull out a 1,000 baht note and they assume you're a big spender. Keep your 20s and 100s handy so you can pay the exact amount you negotiate without giving them an excuse to round up.

For the saffron, aim for the stalls run by the older Sikh families near the back of the fabric section. They tend to keep their stock in small metal tins rather than glass jars, which preserves the aroma better. If you see bright orange threads that leave a yellow stain on your fingers, that's dyed corn silk, not saffron. Real saffron will be deep red with orange tips and should feel dry and brittle, not oily.

ngl the saffron game in Phahurat is all about knowing who's been there longest. skip the guys with the big colorful displays near the street, they rotate stock fast and dont care about repeat customers. head to the soi between the main fabric hall and the gold shops, there's a tiny stall run by an old Punjabi guy named Mr. Singh, he's been there since the 80s and keeps his saffron in those old-school Thai ceramic pots. his stuff is around 1,700 baht a gram and it's legit, he'll even let you smell it first which the fakers wont do cause theirs smells like nothing or hay. for bargaining just be chill and ask "how much for real kesar?" in a casual tone, he respects that way more than someone trying to haggle aggressively

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
