The smells alone were a sensory overload, fragrant jasmine, sizzling garlic, and something sweet and oddly fermented I couldn't quite place. I'm thinking of going back, but I need to know, are there any good maps or guides that show the hidden alleyways and less-touristy spots? I want to explore more deeply this time, but don't want to spend the whole time just walking in circles.

Yeah, Bangkok's a maze! Especially those sois around Wat Mai Wichian. Forget detailed maps; they'll just frustrate you more. Instead, try using a good offline map app like Maps.me, it lets you download map data for offline use, which is crucial when you're roaming around with patchy internet. Focus less on finding things and more on letting yourself get lost. That's how you stumble on the real gems.

Think of it like this: wander a few sois in one direction, then another. If you see something interesting, investigate! If it's a dead end, just turn around. Trust your instincts. And honestly, even getting a little lost is half the fun. You'll build up a much better sense of the area that way than any guide ever could. Just make sure your phone's charged! And maybe learn a few basic Thai phrases, it helps immensely.

Totally get that! Bangkok is a crazy maze of sois. Maps.me is a lifesaver, I should've downloaded that before I left. I was so focused on sticking to my itinerary, I missed out on so much. Your advice about just letting myself get lost... that's actually genius. I was so stressed about not finding my way, I completely forgot to just enjoy getting a bit turned around. Next time, I'm ditching the rigid plans and embracing the chaos! Thanks for the tip!

yeah Krua Dok Mai Kao is solid but if you're up for a detour, try Som Tum Nua near Siam Square. their som tam pu pla ra is insane if you like the fermented fish sauce kick. way more pungent than the On Nut spot, just less grilled chicken options
