the gondola usually does its annual maintenance in may or june, roughly two weeks, and they run shuttle buses from Taipei Zoo MRT to Maokong during that time. its not as scenic obviously but teh buses are free and run every 20 min or so. if you just want the tea houses up top, take the bus to Maokong station then walk, or grab a taxi from the zoo for around 300nt split between a few people. honestly the bus is fine, just slower.

tbh the maintenance dates shift year to year so checking the official Taipei Metro site or their app is your best bet, they post the exact closure window a few weeks ahead. last year it ran a bit longer than the usual two weeks because of cable work near Zhinan Temple station. one thing people forget is the Taipei Zoo itself stays open, so if you're already there you can just do the zoo and skip the gondola entirely. also the Maokong bus S10 from the zoo runs less often on weekdays, maybe every 30 to 40 min, so plan for a wait.

Heads up that the gondola also shuts down for typhoon days and right after one passes, even if the storm missed us, since they need to inspect the cables. So a random closure in summer isn't always scheduled maintenance. For getting up there instead, the Maokong bus S10 is the usual backup but you can also take the Brown Line to Taipei Zoo and just hike the Zhinan Temple trail if you're up for it, takes about an hour and change.

If you have personal experience with a place that helped alleviate jaw tightness or related headaches, please share: - The name of the establishment - The specific treatment you received - Whether you noticed a significant improvement

For muscle-based jaw tightness, the traditional 推拿 places often do better than the fancy facial spas, and they're cheaper. There's a small 國術館 near Shuanglian I go to for neck and jaw stuff, the guy works the masseter from outside and does traction on the cervical spine, which is where a lot of referred jaw tension actually starts. Around NT$800 for 40 minutes, no booking app, you just walk in. It won't fix a real joint problem but if your issue is muscular clenching it's worth a try.

if its actual tmj stuff and not just cosmetic face massage, go see a dentist who does 咬合板 (occlusal splint) first, the massage places treat the symptom not the joint. dr chen at a clinic off fuxing south road near daan park sorted my clicking in like 3 visits, mostly by adjusting my bite & giving me a night guard. the relief from that lasted way longer than any spa facial i tried

my physio at a small clinic near Liuzhangli MRT did intraoral work on my masseter and pterygoid muscles, basically gloved finger inside the cheek releasing trigger points. weird at first but it fixed the morning headaches within maybe 4 sessions. its not a spa thing at all, its rehab, so book it as a medical visit. 針灸 also helped me, the needles go in the jaw and temple, but the physio did more for the actual tightness.
