I've heard the night markets are amazing, but I'm more interested in the smaller, less touristy food stalls, the kind locals frequent. Any recommendations on where to find these hidden culinary gems? I'm particularly interested in trying some less common Taiwanese dishes. I'm not afraid of anything adventurous, but I'd appreciate it if anyone could point me toward a place that isn't just aimed at tourists.

Zhongzheng's real strength for what you're after is the old neighborhood cluster around Nanmen and the lanes feeding off it, but everyone hits the obvious stalls. Go a bit south toward the Guting and Taipower Building side, where the student crowd from NTU keeps prices honest. Look for a breakfast counter doing fantuan with pickled radish and pork floss, and around dinnertime the little shops serving goose noodles and clam soup, which you rarely see on tourist menus. The best ones open around 5pm and shut once the pot empties, usually by 8.

the area around Nanmen Market gets mentioned a lot but people sleep on the little alleys off Chaozhou Street near the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial end. there's an old dude doing ba wan and rou geng that only shows up like 2pm to sell out, mostly neighborhood folks and taxi drivers. also try the stalls by Guting MRT exit 3 at night, less polished than Shilin but you'll find stuff like eel noodles and oyster omelettes that are half teh price. just go before 7 or the good ones pack up

skip the night market stuff in zhongzheng honestly, the good stuff is around nanjichang at like 6am. find the stall doing xian dou jiang & youtiao, locals are all there before work. also look for hujiao bing carts near the ditan area, way better than the tourist spots

If you have personal experience with a place that helped alleviate jaw tightness or related headaches, please share: - The name of the establishment - The specific treatment you received - Whether you noticed a significant improvement

For muscle-based jaw tightness, the traditional 推拿 places often do better than the fancy facial spas, and they're cheaper. There's a small 國術館 near Shuanglian I go to for neck and jaw stuff, the guy works the masseter from outside and does traction on the cervical spine, which is where a lot of referred jaw tension actually starts. Around NT$800 for 40 minutes, no booking app, you just walk in. It won't fix a real joint problem but if your issue is muscular clenching it's worth a try.

if its actual tmj stuff and not just cosmetic face massage, go see a dentist who does 咬合板 (occlusal splint) first, the massage places treat the symptom not the joint. dr chen at a clinic off fuxing south road near daan park sorted my clicking in like 3 visits, mostly by adjusting my bite & giving me a night guard. the relief from that lasted way longer than any spa facial i tried

my physio at a small clinic near Liuzhangli MRT did intraoral work on my masseter and pterygoid muscles, basically gloved finger inside the cheek releasing trigger points. weird at first but it fixed the morning headaches within maybe 4 sessions. its not a spa thing at all, its rehab, so book it as a medical visit. 針灸 also helped me, the needles go in the jaw and temple, but the physio did more for the actual tightness.
