I've heard amazing things about the night markets, but I'm a bit overwhelmed by the sheer number of them. Any recommendations on which ones offer the most authentic and less touristy experience? I want to eat like a local, not just see the sights. I'm particularly interested in trying some less common street foods, maybe something beyond the usual bubble tea and gua bao. Ideally, somewhere with a good atmosphere, maybe even some live music. Any tips would be appreciated!

ngl the live music + food stalls combo is kinda rare in zhongzheng but there's a workaround. head to the area around qingguang market after 9pm, the whole street turns into this semi-illegal food gathering with plastic tables and chairs spilling onto the sidewalk. there's a stall that does "you yu geng" (squid soup with thickener) that most tourists skip because it looks weird, but it's amazing with some black vinegar and white pepper

if you want the full local experience walk toward the kuomintang headquarters on zhongshan south road, there's a row of stalls selling "jiachang cai" (home style dishes) off little plates. the old guys there just point at what they want and the auntie heats it up. grab some "lu rou fan" and a side of "bai qie ji" (poached chicken) and you'll see why taipei people don't bother with the big markets

honestly skip the main night market hubs for a sec and head to Nanjichang Night Market. it's smaller, way more chill, and the crowd is 90% older taipei residents doing their grocery run. you'll find stuff like tian bu la (sweet salty fish cake sticks) and proper lu wei (braised meats) that tourists usually miss.

for something real random, look for a cart selling "dan bing" outside a temple or school around 5pm. it's a thin egg crepe rolled with different fillings, way better than the typical scallion pancake. also keep an eye out for stalls doing "shui jiao" (boiled dumplings) with weird fillings like chive and egg or pork with corn, those are prob the most local thing you can grab around here

live music is tough in the food stall areas tbh. your best bet is to wander near the riverside parks after eating, sometimes there's bands setting up informally. or just grab a beer from a convenience store and sit on a random bench, the atmosphere is still solid

the key to zhongzheng is timing not just location. hit the food court under nanmen market around 10am and you'll see aunties prepping fresh hand-pulled biang biang noodles and rolling out scallion pancakes from scratch, it's not a night market vibe but it's the most real food scene in the district

for actual night stalls, skip nanjichang and go to the small cluster on ningbo west street near the control yuan. there's a guy who does charcoal-grilled squid with this sticky sweet soy glaze that's totally different from the fried stuff everywhere else. and right next to him sells "liang mian huang" which is basically crispy pan-fried noodles with pork and veggies, super rare to find outside taipei

live music is nearly impossible with food stalls because of noise laws, but the little park at the intersection of changsha street and zhonghua road has buskers some nights. grab a bag of "ba wan" (meat and veggie dumplings in a translucent skin) from the cart near the park entrance and just sit on the wall, you'll hear something eventually

If you have personal experience with a place that helped alleviate jaw tightness or related headaches, please share: - The name of the establishment - The specific treatment you received - Whether you noticed a significant improvement

For muscle-based jaw tightness, the traditional 推拿 places often do better than the fancy facial spas, and they're cheaper. There's a small 國術館 near Shuanglian I go to for neck and jaw stuff, the guy works the masseter from outside and does traction on the cervical spine, which is where a lot of referred jaw tension actually starts. Around NT$800 for 40 minutes, no booking app, you just walk in. It won't fix a real joint problem but if your issue is muscular clenching it's worth a try.

if its actual tmj stuff and not just cosmetic face massage, go see a dentist who does 咬合板 (occlusal splint) first, the massage places treat the symptom not the joint. dr chen at a clinic off fuxing south road near daan park sorted my clicking in like 3 visits, mostly by adjusting my bite & giving me a night guard. the relief from that lasted way longer than any spa facial i tried

my physio at a small clinic near Liuzhangli MRT did intraoral work on my masseter and pterygoid muscles, basically gloved finger inside the cheek releasing trigger points. weird at first but it fixed the morning headaches within maybe 4 sessions. its not a spa thing at all, its rehab, so book it as a medical visit. 針灸 also helped me, the needles go in the jaw and temple, but the physio did more for the actual tightness.
