Neihu's Hidden Lanes?

I've heard it's buzzing with tech, but also has these quieter, more residential areas tucked away. Anyone know about the best little local eateries or tea houses hidden down those side streets? I'm hoping to find somewhere authentic, away from the main business areas. Seriously craving some good Taiwanese food and a peaceful atmosphere after a long day of meetings. It's supposed to be a bit of a maze, so any tips on navigating the smaller lanes would be appreciated!

fwiw the best hidden spot isnt even on google maps. there's a family-run place on lane 188 wende road called Ah-Ma's, they do this incredible chicken soup with ginger and rice wine that's perfect after a day of meetings. no sign in english, just a red lantern outside a converted garage, they close at 7pm sharp so go early.

for navigating, ignore google maps in the alleys between neihu road and the lake, it gets confused by all the dead ends. just follow the sound of mahjong tiles, that's where the real neighborhood is. the tea houses up on the hill near the old temple are nice but the real hidden gem is the rooftop garden on top of the 7-story building at the corner of wende and kangning, they have a community garden up there with benches and its completely silent except for birds.

tbh the best thing about neihu's backstreets is the dan bing stands that pop up around 7am and vanish by 9. there's one on lane 43 of wende road, no name, just a lady with a griddle and a stack of plastic stools, does a scallion dan bing with a crispy edge that folds over itself like an envelope. for post-meeting decompression, walk past the dahu park tennis courts and up the stairs behind the public pool, there's a stone path that leads to a tiny pavilion overlooking the whole tech park, zero people ever up there. the lanes are confusing because the numbering skips sometimes, but if you hit a dead end just backtrack and take the next cut-through, they all connect eventually

Heading further into the residential blocks behind the main tech park, near the intersection of Kangning Road and Lane 31, there's a small noodle shop called Xiao Wu that only serves one thing: scallion oil noodles with a perfectly runny egg on top. It's run by a couple who close whenever they feel like it, usually by 1pm, so you'd want to get there early. For a quieter evening, walk up to the small park near the Neihu mudslide area, there's a bench overlooking the valley where you can hear frogs instead of traffic. The lanes around there are a bit of a tangle, but if you keep the lake on your right as you walk deeper in, you won't loop back on yourself.

If you have personal experience with a place that helped alleviate jaw tightness or related headaches, please share: - The name of the establishment - The specific treatment you received - Whether you noticed a significant improvement

For muscle-based jaw tightness, the traditional 推拿 places often do better than the fancy facial spas, and they're cheaper. There's a small 國術館 near Shuanglian I go to for neck and jaw stuff, the guy works the masseter from outside and does traction on the cervical spine, which is where a lot of referred jaw tension actually starts. Around NT$800 for 40 minutes, no booking app, you just walk in. It won't fix a real joint problem but if your issue is muscular clenching it's worth a try.

if its actual tmj stuff and not just cosmetic face massage, go see a dentist who does 咬合板 (occlusal splint) first, the massage places treat the symptom not the joint. dr chen at a clinic off fuxing south road near daan park sorted my clicking in like 3 visits, mostly by adjusting my bite & giving me a night guard. the relief from that lasted way longer than any spa facial i tried

my physio at a small clinic near Liuzhangli MRT did intraoral work on my masseter and pterygoid muscles, basically gloved finger inside the cheek releasing trigger points. weird at first but it fixed the morning headaches within maybe 4 sessions. its not a spa thing at all, its rehab, so book it as a medical visit. 針灸 also helped me, the needles go in the jaw and temple, but the physio did more for the actual tightness.
