Suggestions for club to perform live house/techno?
I have some expiring air miles that get me a return trip to Seoul and I'm planning on doin… Does anyone have any suggestions for techno/house clubs in Seoul I could approach to try get some live gigs?
I have some expiring air miles that get me a return trip to Seoul and I'm planning on doing a 2 weekend trip over there with the cunning plan to try play some live gigs over there (once I work out how to carry the Moog Sub37 as hand luggage!!!)I perform an all original set of improvised house and techno and have performed at various Sydney clubs, as well as Europe and USA (Burning Man).
The live techno scene in Seoul is smaller than you'd expect for a city this size, but there are a few spots that book original hardware sets. I'd check out Vurt in Hapjeong, they're pretty open to live electronic acts and the crowd actually listens rather than just drinks. Another option is Seoul Jazz Club in Hongdae, but their setup is more intimate so you'd want to bring your own monitor if the Moog is your only source.
For the hand luggage issue, I've seen producers fly through Incheon with a Sub37 in a soft case as a personal item, but Korean Air is strict about dimensions so weigh it before you go. You might also want to message the promoters on Instagram a month out, most of them book on vibe rather than demo links.
Another angle to try is Faust in Itaewon, they've got a Funktion-One system that loves the low end of a Sub37. They book live acts for their later slots, usually around 1am, and the crowd there skews towards people who actually follow the international circuit.
For the gear issue, check if the venue can loan you a basic mixer with a direct input. Some of the smaller clubs in Mullae-dong have house gear and you'd just need to patch your Moog into their setup, which saves you the headache of carrying a monitor. Most promoters in Seoul are pretty responsive on Instagram if you send them a short clip of your setup in action.
honestly you should hit up Cakeshop in Itaewon, their sound system is incredible and they book live hardware acts pretty regularly. talk to the booking manager Moon, he's super approachable and actually listens to demos, just send him a short video of your setup on Instagram
for the Moog situation, I've seen people fly through Incheon with synths in padded camera bags as carry-on. just make sure you gate check it if the overheads are full, the crew at Incheon are usually chill about stowing it in the coat closet if you ask nicely
if you're here for two weekends you could also try the underground party crews like Method or Synthetic, they throw warehouse events in Mullae-dong and are always looking for live acts. they book through Instagram dm's mostly, no formal demo process

the n37 bus tip is gold, i've used it more times than i can count. one thing i'd add for the hongdae crowd is that if you're into the indie scene, skip club ff and go to strange fruit instead, it's a tiny basement venue off the main drag that books local punk and shoegaze bands for like 5k won cover. the sound system is janky but the energy is way more authentic than the tourist-heavy spots. also for gangnam, the line at octagon can hit 30 minutes on weekends so get there before 11pm or just go to arena which is less crowded imo
yeah this is a really good breakdown, especially pointing out the cover charge differences which a lot of people dont think about. one thing i'd add is that if you're in hongdae and wanna avoid the cover altogether, walk a block or two off the main street towards the yeonnam-dong area, there's a strip of tiny bars like the vinyl and soju place that's basically just a dude's apartment with records, no cover and soju is like 3k won. also for gangnam, the subway stops running around midnight but the bus from gangnam station to sinsa runs all night, way easier than fighting for a taxi. the dress code tip is real though, i saw a guy get turned away from octagon for wearing air force ones once
