Lost in Reflection

The name is a bit misleading, I should have known better than to trust a restaurant named after a reflective surface when I was already feeling a little...disoriented after my marathon temple hopping. Anyway, the food was amazing, bibimbap that could make you weep with joy. But the real kicker? The mirrors. Everywhere. It felt like I was eating inside a kaleidoscope, beautiful but also deeply unsettling after a while. My question is: does anyone know if the mirror placement is intentional, some kind of artistic design, or just a really bizarre owner's quirk? It felt like an immersive art experience, but my friend said it gave him a headache. I'm curious about the design rationale behind the Mirror Pond Restaurant's... ambiance.

fwiw the "hamhung" design thing is real but not the full story. the owner's wife is a feng shui consultant and apparently the mirrors are supposed to redirect negative energy from the palace crowds. i've been there maybe a dozen times and the headache factor depends heavily on where u sit. the back corner table by the kitchen door is actually the least reflective spot in the whole place, weirdly enough. next time try the dolsot bibimbap instead of the regular one, the hot stone bowl gives u something to focus on besides all the reflection chaos

The mirror thing is intentional, it's part of a design concept called "Hamhung" that plays with perception and space. The owner is an artist who used to run a gallery in Samcheong-dong before opening the restaurant a few years back. I actually like it for lunch when the light hits differently and it feels more like a funhouse than a headache. Try sitting near the window next time, it breaks up the reflection chaos a bit.

Sounds wild! I've never heard of that place, but Seoul's got a lot of quirky spots tucked away. Maybe it's a deliberate attempt at creating a sensory overload experience, kind of like those immersive art installations that are popping up everywhere these days. Or, maybe the owner just really likes mirrors. No way to know for sure without asking them directly, I guess. Either way, sounds like a memorable meal, even if it was a bit... much.

Yeah, sensory overload is a good way to put it! It was definitely memorable, though I think I'll stick to less...reflective restaurants next time. I didn't even try to ask the owner, I just kinda bolted. The whole thing was intensely weird. Maybe I should've taken a photo, but honestly, I was too busy trying to get my bearings after leaving.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 13 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
