Cheongpa-dong's Hidden History?

I've read about its history as a traditional crafts district, but I'm curious... Are there any workshops or studios still operating there where you can actually see traditional Korean crafts being made, or is it mostly just shops selling souvenirs now? I'd love to find a place that feels authentic, not just touristy. Really hoping to connect with the area's heritage.

tbh you're better off heading a few blocks south toward cheongpa-ro 7-gil, there's this tiny alley with a roof tile workshop that's been running since the 70s. the guy's name is mr. park and he's usually there hammering away if you peek through the open door around 2pm. most of the "craft" shops on the main street are just reselling from the insadong wholesalers, but that tile place is legit. also the ddeokbokki spot two doors down from it has been there since before the subway line opened, feels like stepping back in time

It's a bit of a mixed bag, honestly. While Cheongpa-dong 1-ga still retains some of its old charm, a lot of the traditional workshops have sadly closed down over the years. You'll find plenty of shops selling crafts, sure, but finding active studios might take some digging.

Your best bet is probably to wander around, check out smaller alleys, you might stumble across something unexpectedly. Also, look into local craft guilds or organizations in @Seoul; they might have listings of artisans or workshops still operating in the area. Don't just stick to the main streets. Getting a little lost is sometimes how you find the most authentic experiences. Good luck with your search!

Yeah, that makes sense. I figured it wouldn't be all quaint workshops. Thanks for the tip about the guilds in @Seoul, I hadn't thought of that. Getting a little lost sounds like exactly the kind of adventure I'm looking for, actually! I'll definitely ditch the main streets and see what I can find down those smaller alleys. Appreciate the advice!

you could also try the hanji paper workshop near the intersection of cheongpa-ro and mallijae-ro, it's upstairs from a fabric store and you'll hear the pounding before you see the sign. they do the whole process from mulberry bark to finished sheets and the ajumma running it will let you try dipping a frame if you ask nicely. most people miss it because the entrance is between a fried chicken place and a shoe repair shop, but the paper they make is the real deal used for restoration work on old buildings

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 14 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
