Apparently, there are some persistent rumors of strange happenings after dark, unexplained noises, flickering lights, the works. Is there any truth to these ghost stories, or is it just bored soldiers embellishing things? I'm not easily spooked, but I'm curious. It's not something I see mentioned in official guides. My colleague mentioned that the local Koreans have their own tales of the place, different from the military ones. I'd be interested in finding out more about those too.

fwiw i've actually been inside camp coiner a few times for work events and the weirdest part isn't the ghosts it's how quiet it gets after 10pm. like dead quiet. the korean security guards there have their own stories though, one told me they refuse to walk past building 140 alone at night because of "something" near the old laundry facility. no idea if it's true but he seemed dead serious

the local korean stories aren't really about the base itself, more about the whole yongsan area. there's a famous one about a joseon-era yangban who buried his servant alive near namyeon station for stealing rice, and people say her spirit wanders around that whole ridge. the construction during japanese rule just stirred it all up again. prob just folklore but it's fun to think about

My father-in-law was stationed at Yongsan Garrison in the 90s and he remembers the Korean maintenance guys always burning incense near the drainage ditches along the fence line between Coiner and the residential area. They never explained why, just did it every evening. When he finally asked a local shopkeeper in Hannam-dong, she said the ditch follows an old stream bed that was used for "unfortunate water burials" during the Joseon famine years, babies mostly. The incense was just a small ritual, not connected to any specific ghost story but more of a general respect thing. He said the Americans assumed it was mosquito repellent.

the korean stories definitely go deeper than the military ones. i lived in yongsan for a few years and heard from an old taxi driver that the whole area around hangangjin used to be execution grounds during the joseon dynasty, like criminals and political prisoners were dealt with near the river. he said the spirits are supposed to be restless because the bodies were never properly honored, just dumped. camp coiner sits right on that slope so it makes sense locals avoid it after dark.

the building 140 thing is real though, i've had a friend who worked as a civilian contractor there and he said the basement level always felt off, like a constant draft even in summer. korean security guys have a word for it, they call it "han" energy, like lingering resentment. probably just old pipes and bad hvac but they take it seriously enough to walk in pairs.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
