Noryangjin Fish Market Woes

I've heard stories... mountains of seafood, haggling like it's a blood sport, and enough raw fish to feed a small army. I'm a bit nervous, to be honest. I'm not exactly a seafood expert, and the thought of choosing my own live octopus... yikes. Any tips on how to navigate the market without getting completely ripped off or accidentally buying something I can't cook? I really wanna try some fresh sashimi, but I want to make sure I don't end up with something that's, uh... questionable. Plus, what's the best way to get there from Myeongdong? The subway seems complicated.

fwiw the whole "haggle like a blood sport" thing is overblown. you can just smile and nod and pay the marked price half the time and still come out fine. the real trick is to go with a friend so you can split a bigger fish and get way better value per person

for transport, the subway is fine but if youre already in myeongdong just grab a taxi. its like 15 minutes and under 10,000 won. tell the driver "noryangjin suksan" and theyll drop you at the main gate. way less confusing than navigating seoul station transfer

also theres a little shop on the second floor near the escalators that does a mean grilled eel if the raw stuff scares you. its not fancy but its cheap and the ajumma running it is super nice

people are overhyping the haggling tbh, ive been going there for years and just pointing at what i want and paying the price on the tag works fine. if you want sashimi look for the stalls with the yellow banners that say "hoe" (회) written on them, those are the ones that specialize in slicing it fresh. the vendors will clean and fillet it for you on the spot for like 5,000 won extra

for the subway thing, line 1 from myeongdong is fine but the station itself has two exits, make sure you take exit 1 or youll end up on the wrong side of the highway and have to walk around. and bring a reusable bag because theyll wrap your fish in styrofoam and newspaper and its awkward to carry otherwise

yeah its a madhouse but in a fun way. if youre nervous about picking seafood find a stall that looks busy with locals, theyre usually the ones with good turnover so nothing sits out too long. theres a row of shops near the entrance that sell little side dishes like kimchi and rice, grab some before you sit down for sashimi or youll be stuck paying restaurant markup for the same stuff

for the live octopus thing just tell the vendor "san-nakji" if you want it chopped up and served right there, theyll kill it and dice it for you. tastes like nothing really, just chewy with sesame oil. if thats too intense just stick to flatfish or sea bream, theyre easy and forgiving fish

the subway is fine but honestly if youre in myeongdong just take a taxi. its like 15 minutes and less than 10,000 won, saves you the transfer at seoul station which can be a maze. tell the driver "noryangjin suksan" and theyll drop you right at the main gate

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 14 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
