I stumbled upon this incredible little tea house tucked away, it felt like a secret garden. The tea was amazing, but the real kicker was the old woman who ran the place. She didn't speak much English, but somehow we communicated perfectly. I'm dying to know: What other hidden, unassuming places like that exist in Cheongpa-dong 1-ga that aren't plastered all over tourist sites? I feel like I only scratched the surface...

honestly the best thing about cheongpa-dong 1-ga is how residential it is, most of the places there aren't trying to be found by tourists. there's this old man who runs a tiny stationery shop near the intersection with cheongpa-ro 7-gil, he also sells homemade sikhye from a cooler and it's the best i've had outside of a temple stay. also if you go down the alley behind the namsan public library there's a woman who makes handmade dubu by her window every morning, she'll sell u a block for like 3,000 won if u knock and ask nicely

Not sure if you're still in the area but there's this tiny jjigae spot on the corner near the Cheongpa police box, no signage just a red awning. The ajumma there makes a killer kimchi jjigae with this super funky aged kimchi, prob her own stash. Also if you head up the hill past the old public bath, there's a rooftop bar that's basically just some guy's apartment with a few tables, great view of Namsan Tower and they serve makgeolli in big brass bowls. Most people walk right past it.

oh man, that tea house sounds like a dream. if you head deeper into the residential bits past the namsan public library, there's a tiny bakery that only opens when the owner feels like it, no sign just a curtain and the smell of red bean bread. she bakes like five things a day and sells out by lunch, total luck to catch it

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 14 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
