Seriously impressive scale models of everything, palaces, villages, even the DMZ! My niece was glued to it for hours. I was trying to figure out which buildings were historically accurate and which were maybe... artistic license? Some of the tiny details were incredible, though. Anyone know how accurate the representations are to the real thing?

i've heard some of the models were based on old photos and drawings from the joseon era, so the big stuff is solid, but the tiny everyday objects like market stalls and tools are totally made up. the museum's curators apparently worked with historians but had to guess on a lot of the small-scale details. if you're into the real deal, the seoul museum of history across the river has actual artifacts and a similar mini seoul display that's way more grounded.

You can actually spot some inaccuracies if you know the real sites well. The Gyeongbokgung model has the main throne hall facing south like it should, but they messed up the placement of the rear pavilions near Hyangwonjeong pond. I noticed it because I walk through there every few months, the real layout has a different flow through the garden paths. Still, for a free exhibit inside the main museum complex, it's hard to beat as a starting point before you drag your niece to see the actual palaces.

yeah the model of jongmyo shrine is actually super faithful, i've been there half a dozen times and the proportions are spot on. the miniature trees around it look like they're straight out of the real courtyard, same species and spacing. the market scenes are pure fantasy though, no way those colorful stalls ever existed like that, more like a disney version of a joseon marketplace

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 15 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
