Weekend Pubcrawl: Hongdae or Itaewon?

Hey everyone! I'll be in Seoul this weekend by myself and plan to join a pub crawl. Has anyone tried this before? Which one would you recommend, Hongdae or Itaewon? I'd appreciate your suggestions! if you're going solo, i'd lean itaewon just because the crowd skews older and more english-friendly. the hongdae one is fun but half the night you're trying to figure out what the korean drinking games are and people switch to korean after a few rounds. itaewon's pub crawl usually starts near hamilton hotel around 8 and hits like 4-5 spots, ends at some club on the main strip where you can actually dance without elbowing students. just watch your wallet on the street near the curry house corner, pickpockets love that spot on weekend nights

honestly it depends on what day you're going. saturday night in hongdae the streets are packed with students and street performers near the main exit 9 area, itaewon gets more of an older crowd and expats. the hongdae pub crawl usually hits spots near sangsu station which has that gritty underground feel, itaewon's tends to be around the us military base side with more bottle service vibes. if you're solo and want to actually chat with people without shouting over edm, hongdae's better for that

Hongdae for the quirky, artsy vibe and more indie music scene. Itaewon's got a more international, clubby feel. Depends what you're after, really.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
