Maybach's everywhere, McLaren's, Lamborghinis etc.. and the dressing is top notch too- trench coats and Canada goose are so common.

How do people have all this money? I thought the cost of living was high compared to income?

You're seeing a very specific slice of Seoul, mostly Gangnam and Hannam-dong, where the chaebol families and the new crypto/tech money actually live. Those Maybachs and McLarenes are usually chauffeur-driven or parked outside the Galleria百货, and the owners are not the ones stressing about rent.

A lot of what you saw is also "gap investment" wealth, people who bought apartments in the late 2010s and watched them triple in value, then borrowed against that to buy cars and imported coats. The real cost of living crunch hits the younger crowd in Guro or Nowon, where a one-room jeonse deposit can eat up six years of savings, and they're eating gimbap from GS25 to make rent.

That said, there's a huge rental market for luxury cars here. A weekend Lamborghini rental runs about 1.5 to 2 million won, and it's a common flex for influencers or guys trying to impress on a date. The Canada Goose thing is funny because half of those are fake, sold in Dongdaemun for 80,000 won, so don't take the outer layer at face value.

If you want to see the real money, check out the parking lot of The Hyundai Seoul in Yeouido on a weekday afternoon, that's where the actual asset-heavy folks are, and they drive older, boring black Genesis or Mercedes S-Class, not the flashy stuff.

the funny thing is half that "old money" look is just the new money playbook. everyone's copying the same script now, black coat, quiet luxury bag, maybe a vintage cartier tank. you see more fake rolexes in hongdae than real ones in gangnam honestly. but the actual rich people i know here, they don't dress like that at all, they wear patagonia fleeces and drive a 2018 granduer to work. the flex is the building they own, not the car they sit in.

if u really wanna spot the difference, go to a golf course on a weekday morning. that's where the real asset holders are, not the influencers. or check out the parking at seoul forest on a sunday, all the young chaebol kids in their understated eqs or gv80s, no loud exhausts. the loud stuff is almost always rented or leased, and the lease terms on a maybach here are brutal, like 5-7m won a month. so ur seeing people paying for a month of status, not a lifetime of wealth.

honestly the rental thing is way bigger than people think. i know guys who do the whole "gentleman driver" thing, rent a white g90 or a porsche for a day just to park outside a club in cheongdam and take photos. some of those maybachs are also company cars, like drivers for execs who dont even live in seoul full time. the real tell is the watch, not the coat. if they're wearing a casio or an apple watch with a full fur collar, that's a rental or a fake. also, the gap investment

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 15 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
