How can I make the most of 4 full days in Seoul?

I'm a 21-year-old traveler coming to Seoul from Australia for a holiday, arriving on December 28th and staying until January 2nd (over New Year's). I've already booked my restaurant reservations, but I'm looking to fill my days with as many fun activities and must-see spots as possible!

I'm open to just about anything, iconic landmarks, cool neighborhoods, unique experiences, and hidden gems, except for bars and clubbing, as that's not really my thing. Of course, food recommendations are always welcome (even though I've got dinner sorted, I'd love tips for lunch, snacks, and street food!).

What are your favorite things to do in Seoul? Any must-visit attractions, fun cultural activities, or local experiences I shouldn't miss? Let me know, I'd love to hear your tips and recommendations!

Thanks so much in advance for your help!

December is cold here, so dress in layers and bring a reusable cup for the hot drinks you'll definitely be buying. For a proper local morning, walk the Cheonggyecheon stream from Gwanghwamun toward Dongdaemun, it's an easy stroll with good photo spots and the ice festival setup should be running around then. For lunch near there, hit the kalguksu stalls in the underground arcade at Gwangjang, the knife-cut noodles with kimchi are the warmest thing you'll eat all day.

If you want a quieter palace experience than Gyeongbokgung, head to Deoksugung instead, it's smaller but has a lovely stone-wall path outside that's popular with couples and photographers. The Changing of the Guard there happens a few times a day, check the schedule before you go. For a unique cultural thing, try a hanbok rental near Bukchon and wander the alleys, it's touristy but honestly fun and makes for great photos in the winter light. On the 30th or 31st, catch the Nanta show in Myeongdong, it's a percussion comedy thing that runs year-round, perfect for a cold evening and doesn't need any Korean language skills. For snacks, the egg bread stalls in Hongdae are solid, and the corn dogs at the Chungmuro station area are better than the ones in Myeongdong, less queue and more cheese pull.

you're landing right before new year, which is a great time for the seoul lantern festival along the cheonggyecheon, but it's a bit of a mob scene. instead, head to the dongdaemun design plaza at night, the building looks like a spaceship and the LED rose garden is still up usually, way less crowded.

for a proper local day, take the subway out to mangwon market in the morning, grab some fried chicken at the stall near the entrance, then walk over to the han river park there. there's a floating stage and you can see the city skyline from the grass, even in the cold it's a vibe. the purple island bridge nearby is a nice photo spot too.

on the 30th, try the seoul city wall walk from hyehwa station up to naksan, but start before 4pm or the light dies fast. the view over the old rooftops is better than the tower honestly, and there's a cat cafe right at the base of the hill if u need a warm break.

for lunch one day, skip the markets and go to the korean restaurant inside the seoul museum of history, it's cheap and proper home cooking, the japchae and galbi jjim there are solid. also check if the national theater has any pansori or traditional music show on the 31st, they usually do a matinee, it's a unique cultural thing that's not

honestly, since you're here over new year's, make sure you hit up the countdown at Bosingak in Jongno on the 31st. it's the classic bell-ringing thing, super chaotic but fun, and way more local than the big parties. grab some hotteok from a street stall nearby while you wait, that's the move.

for a proper daytime thing, go to Ikseon-dong instead of Bukchon if you want the hanok vibe without the tourist crowds. it's a maze of tiny alleys with cafes and vintage shops, and the vibe is way more relaxed. also, the National Museum of Korea is free and genuinely impressive, great for a rainy or cold afternoon, which you'll prob get.

if you want a cool view without the insane line at N Seoul Tower, hike up to the Seoul City Wall near Naksan Park. it's a short climb, great sunset spot, and you can see the whole city. for lunch, skip the tourist spots and hit Gwangjang Market for the mung bean pancakes at the older stalls, they're way better than the instagram-famous ones.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 14 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
