Where to shop for unfashionable, untrendy people?

fwiw the big underground shopping malls are good for this. Gangnam Station underground has endless stalls with basic tees and socks for like 10,000 won each, zero trend pressure. it's a maze so you can wander for an hour easy

another option is the basement of Lotte World Mall in Jamsil - not the fancy floors but the bottom level where they have the supermarket and random clothing shops. feels more like a department store basement from the 90s than a luxury place. socks and plain shirts are stacked in bins, just dig through

if you're near Yongsan, the I'Park Mall has a big section of basic clothing stores mixed in with electronics on the lower floors. not trendy at all, just functional stuff. kinda dusty vibe tbh

honestly just skip the department stores yeah they're all luxury now. try E-Mart or Homeplus - the ones in larger branches have a whole clothing section with basics that are dirt cheap and nobody's trying to be trendy there. the E-Mart in Wangsimni is huge and you can grab socks for like 5,000 won for a pack of five

if you want a proper big space to wander, head to Techno Mart in Gangbyeon. it's mostly electronics but the lower floors have random clothing stalls selling unbranded shirts and socks in bulk. feels like a warehouse, no pressure to buy anything flashy

the Dongdaemun shopping district is worth a visit but skip the big trendy malls like Migliore or Doota. instead head to the older buildings like Dongdaemun Shopping Town or Heunginjimun Market - they're four or five floors of stalls selling plain t-shirts, socks in bulk packs, and basic underwear with zero branding. prices are like 5,000 won for a tee if you buy a few

for something different try the Namdaemun Market area. it's not a single big space but the alleyways between the main streets have these warehouse-like shops selling factory overstock and unbranded basics. you'll find socks for 1,000 won each and plain button-ups for under 20,000. the vendors are all ajummas who won't try to sell you anything fancy

there's also the basement level of Time Square in Yeongdeungpo. it's connected to the Shinsegae department store but the bottom floor has a random mix of cheap clothing stalls mixed in with the food court and bookstore. feels like a forgotten corner where nobody bothers to curate the inventory

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 14 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
