What are some of the best eel bbq in Seoul?

I heard grilled freshwater eel is really good, so I'm considering to try it when I visit Seoul, Korea. Budget not a problem. As long it's delicious!

Any recommendations?? Thanks!

Hangaram and 풍천민물장어 look interesting

fwiw since budget's not an issue, try 일미집 near Express Bus Terminal. it's an old school spot where they bring the eel live to the table in a bowl before grilling, kinda intense but you know it's fresh. they use 참숯 charcoal and the 서빙 (serving) style is super traditional, no fancy twists. the owner's been at it for like 30 years and will personally flip each piece so it hits that perfect char.

one thing nobody mentions is the timing. go for lunch if u can, the afternoon crowd is way lighter and you get more attention from the staff. dinner rush there gets loud and the ajummas get rushed, still good but less chill. also ask for the 내장 (innards) if they have it, grilled with salt and sesame oil, it's an acquired taste but regulars order it every time. pair with 동동주 instead of soju, the milky rice wine balances the smokiness better imo.

honestly if budget isnt an issue, skip the chain spots and go for a place that does the whole experience. try 산청골장어 in Gangnam, they source their jangeo fresh and grill it over charcoal, not gas. the skin gets that crispy snap while the meat stays juicy, and their ssamjang is house made with a hint of perilla oil. ask for the 꼬리 (tail) portion too, it's chewy and full of flavor.

fwiw, Hangaram is solid but leans touristy these days. 풍천민물장어 is more traditional, but the queue can be brutal. if u want zero fuss and max flavor, Ilpyeon Jangeo in Hongdae is decent but the portions are smaller. for the real deal, go to a jangeo gui place that has those low charcoal tables and lets u grill it yourself, the smokiness is night and day. pair it with a cold soju and some 깻잎, u'll thank me later.

If you're already looking at 풍천민물장어, that's a pretty safe bet for the classic style. But another one locals swear by is 장어구이골목 in Jongno, it's this little alley with a handful of places that have been doing it for decades. The older ajummas running the spots will basically tell you how to eat it, and the banchan comes out nonstop. Go for the ones with the wooden stools and charcoal grills right at the table, that's where the regulars sit.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
