honestly just dont try it. they check tickets on every single KTX run like clockwork, usually right after departure and again before Daejeon. if ur caught without a ticket theyll make u pay the full fare plus a 30% penalty, which is actually worse than just getting a standing ticket at the station beforehand
standing tickets are the move if seats are sold out. you can buy them at the counter or the korail app, theyre like 30% cheaper and you just chill in the last car or near the doors. no hiding spot works on KTX, ive seen them check the bathrooms too
so you'd get hit with a penalty on top of the base fare, usually around 15k won extra i think. korail has staff walking through every car checking seats so hiding in the bathroom or between cars isn't really an option. better to just book a standing ticket in advance if it's sold out, those are 30% cheaper and you still get a spot in the standing car
