🏙️ Where to Start
Seoul is a sprawling metropolis with dozens of neighborhoods, each with its own personality and price range. For first-time visitors, the best areas to focus on are Myeongdong, Gangnam, Hongdae, Insadong, and Itaewon. These districts offer a mix of convenience, attractions, and accommodation options for all budgets. In 2026, expect nightly rates to range from $30 for a basic guesthouse to over $500 for a luxury hotel.

🛍️ Myeongdong: Shopping Central
Myeongdong is a bustling shopping district with street food, cosmetics stores, and easy access to subway lines 4 and 2. It suits travelers who want to be in the heart of the action and close to major sights like Namsan Tower. Budget stays start around $40 per night, mid-range hotels average $100 to $180, and high-end options like the Lotte Hotel Seoul can exceed $300. The Nine Tree Premier Hotel Myeongdong II is a solid mid-range choice with modern rooms and a rooftop terrace. Book via Agoda or Booking.com; prices tend to be lower if you reserve at least two months in advance.

💼 Gangnam: Modern and Upscale
Gangnam is Seoul's upscale business and entertainment hub, known for luxury shopping, high-rise offices, and trendy cafes. It suits business travelers and those who prefer a polished, modern atmosphere. Budget options are scarce, but you can find simple stays from $60; mid-range hotels like the Park Hyatt Seoul start around $250, and luxury properties such as the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas go for $400 and up. The area is well-connected by subway lines 2 and 9, and the Airport Limousine bus stops at major hotels. For the best rates, check the hotel's official site for packages, as they often include breakfast or credits.

🎨 Hongdae: Youth and Nightlife
Hongdae is the epicenter of Seoul's youth culture, with indie music, street performances, and a vibrant nightlife. It suits young travelers, backpackers, and anyone looking for a lively, budget-friendly stay. Hostels and guesthouses start at $25 per night, mid-range hotels like the L7 Hongdae by Lotte cost around $120, and there are few high-end options. The area is served by subway line 2, the Airport Railroad, and buses. Booking directly with hostels via Hostelworld often yields the lowest prices, especially for dorm beds.

🏯 Insadong: Traditional Charm
Insadong is a cultural neighborhood with antique shops, tea houses, and art galleries, located near Gyeongbokgung Palace. It suits travelers interested in history and a slower pace, with easy access to subway line 3. Budget hanok stays start around $50, mid-range boutique hotels like the Nine Tree Premier Hotel Insadong average $150, and luxury options are limited. The area is walkable to many palaces and the Cheonggyecheon stream. For a unique experience, book a hanok guesthouse through Airbnb or Booking.com, but do so early as they fill up quickly.

🌍 Itaewon: International Flavor
Itaewon is Seoul's most international district, with diverse restaurants, bars, and shops catering to expats and tourists. It suits those who want a cosmopolitan vibe and easy access to the U.S. military base and Leeum Museum. Budget hotels start at $50, mid-range options like the Grand Hyatt Seoul are around $200, and high-end stays can exceed $350. The area is served by subway line 6 and many bus routes. For the best deals, compare prices on Hotels.com and Agoda, and consider staying slightly uphill for quieter rooms.

💰 Booking Tips and Timing
In 2026, Seoul's hotel prices fluctuate with seasons and events. Cherry blossom season (April) and autumn (October) are peak times, so book at least three months ahead for the best rates. Weekends are also pricier, especially in Gangnam and Hongdae. Use comparison sites like Agoda, Booking.com, and Hotels.com, but also check the hotel's official website for exclusive deals. For budget stays, consider hostels in Hongdae or guesthouses in Insadong.

🚇 Transit and Location
Seoul's subway system is efficient, affordable, and connects all major districts. A single ride costs 1,400 KRW (about $1.10) with a T-money card, and you can transfer between lines for free within 30 minutes. When choosing a hotel, prioritize proximity to a subway station within a 5 to 10 minute walk. The Airport Railroad (AREX) offers direct service from Incheon Airport to Hongdae and Seoul Station, making those areas convenient for arrivals. Taxis are also plentiful but can be slow in traffic.

⏱️ 24-Hour Decision
If you only have 24 hours to decide, pick Myeongdong for its central location, shopping, and easy access to both modern and traditional attractions. It offers a wide range of accommodations and is well-connected to the airport and other neighborhoods. For a quieter, more local experience, Insadong is a great alternative. Ultimately, your choice depends on your budget and interests, but Myeongdong is the safest bet for first-timers.

genuinely useful to see krw figures laid out like this, most guides hand-wave that part

one thing i'd add since nobody mentioned it: the arex express vs all-stop thing matters for hotel choice. the express goes straight to seoul station no stops, but the all-stop commuter line hits hongdae, gongdeok, etc. if ur staying in hongdae the all-stop is actually faster door to door and cheaper, like 4,150 krw vs 9,500 for express. people pay extra for express then taxi back out to hongdae, makes no sense

also for myeongdong, that nine tree premier II rooftop they mentioned is real but the standard rooms are tiny, like 18 sqm. fine for solo but two people with luggage is rough. for a similar price the ibis styles ambassador next to dongdaemun history & culture park gets u way more space and ur still on line 2 & 4

nice work putting actual krw numbers on this, most guides just say "affordable" and leave it there. one thing i'd add from living here: the "book 2 to 3 months ahead" advice flips for korean holidays. seollal and chuseok move every year on the lunar calendar and the whole country travels, so hotels in seoul jack up rates & fill weeks out regardless of season. check the lunar dates before you lock anything, 2026 seollal is mid february.

also for myeongdong specifically, the station has like 14 exits and the one closest to ur hotel can be a 10 min walk underground. look up which exit on naver before u arrive with bags, saved me a miserable drag through the tunnels more than once.

the district pricing is pretty accurate from what i've seen this year. one angle nobody's mentioned: if you're staying more than a week, look at residences and serviced apartments instead of hotels. places like Fraser Place Central near Seoul Station or the Somerset in Gangnam do weekly rates that come out way below the nightly math, and most have a kitchenette which saves a ton on food. i paid around 1.1m krw for 10 nights at a residence near City Hall last month, that's 110k a night for a full apartment when the hotel next door wanted 180k.

also worth knowing, a lot of the cheaper guesthouses in Hongdae don't have elevators and you're hauling bags up 4 floors. fine if you're 25, less fun otherwise.
