It's where I pick up snacks, some supplies, and gifts to bring back. When I was in Incheon last year, I combed through both Home Plus and Lotte Mart. I'll be one subway ride away from the Lotte Dept Store in Myeongdong and was thinking of popping into their grocery.

Will it be worth it or should I head to the Zettaplex near Seoul Station instead?

honestly if you're just looking for snacks and gifts to bring back, the Myeongdong Lotte Dept Store grocery is fine but kinda cramped and touristy. the basement food hall is nice for gifting stuff like 고급 snacks or fancy teas but the prices are marked up compared to Lotte Mart

the Zettaplex near Seoul Station is way bigger and has that proper mart vibe where you can actually browse without bumping into people. plus they have a dedicated section for foreign tourists with tax free shopping and even a shipping counter if you buy too much. only downside is it's a bit of a walk from the station exit

but honestly for quick gifts and snacks the Myeongdong one works, just don't expect the same variety as the big marts. i'd say go to Zettaplex if you have the time, otherwise Myeongdong is fine for a quick grab

the myeongdong one is fine if you're already in the area and just grabbing a few things but it's really more of a department store grocery than a proper mart. the basement level has a decent selection of 고급 snacks and boxed gifts but you'll pay department store prices for everything

the zettaplex is the better move imo. it's actually a proper lotte mart with way more variety and the prices are normal. plus they have that whole section near the checkout where they sell those big gift boxes of korean snacks that tourists love. if you're bringing stuff back it's worth the extra few minutes on the subway

one thing nobody mentioned though - if you go to zettaplex, exit through the seoul station complex and follow the signs for lotte mart. it's connected but the entrance is a bit hidden. you'll save yourself some walking around outside

fwiw the myeongdong lotte grocery is more for browsing than serious shopping. i go there sometimes for the imported cheese section or the fancy fruit gift boxes but it's really not set up for stocking up on snacks. the aisles are narrow and half the stuff is overpriced department store brand items

the zettaplex is the real deal. it's got that warehouse feel and you can actually find the same snacks for half the price. plus they have a dedicated shipping counter near the exit if you buy too much to carry. just be prepared for the crowd on weekends, it gets packed around 2-3pm

one thing i'd add that nobody mentioned yet is the timing. if you go to zettaplex before 11am on a weekday the place is practically empty and you can breeze through. also check their app for coupons, sometimes they have random discounts on snack boxes that make it even cheaper

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 15 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
