What are artists doing for uni then? For example comic artists in Korea. Does anyone know anything I could look into? Thank you ❤️

honestly the 만화애니메이션 route is right but people sleep on 세종대 and 청강 being pretty different in focus. Sejong leans more toward animation and games, Chungkang is more comics and storyboarding, so depends what u actually wanna draw. also worth knowing most webtoon artists I know got good through 스토리작가 or 네이버 challenge stuff, not through a degree at all. the portfolio matters way more than teh diploma here.

Korea doesn't really have "illustration" as a standalone degree the way Western schools do. Most people who end up drawing webtoons or comics go through 만화애니메이션 departments (Hongik, Sejong, Chungkang, Kaywon are the usual names) or 시각디자인 programs, then specialize on their own. The webtoon industry also runs on academies like the ones in Hongdae rather than university degrees, plenty of working artists never finished a formal art program at all. If you want the university route, look at Chungkang or Kaywon, they're the closest thing to what you're describing.

If you're set on a degree route, look at 국민대 시각디자인 or 서울과기대 디자인. Kookmin's program is strong on visual storytelling and a lot of grads go into picture books and editorial work, which is closer to illustration than pure webtoon stuff. Also check 홍익대 미대 회화, sounds weird but plenty of illustrators come out of painting departments and just build a commercial portfolio on the side. Tuition for internationals at these runs around 5 to 7 million won per semester depending on the school.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
