I will be travelling to Seoul and staying in Hongdae ish area between October 3-8 from Canada. I was wondering what do you suggest to bring clothing wise, (jacket, boots, pants, sweater, or tshirts still??) and I was also wondering if any of the major sightseeing places etc need to be booked this far in advance? and if I can book on Klook?

Thank you!!

Early october in Seoul is usually the best weather of the year, like 15-22C daytime. Mornings and nights get chilly though so bring a light jacket or cardigan for layering, tshirts are still fine during the day. I'd skip heavy boots, comfortable sneakers are better since you'll walk a ton in Hongdae and around.

For bookings, most palaces and Namsan Tower you can just show up or buy day-of, but if you want N Seoul Tower observatory or the DMZ tour those fill up, book a week or two ahead on Klook or Trazy. Gyeongbokgung is cheap at the gate, no need to prebook. Only thing I'd lock in now is your airport transfer if you land late, AREX train is easy but the last one is around 10:50pm.

the 3rd being a holiday is worth checking for whatever you plan that day, but the bigger sleeper is chuseok timing, some years it lands early oct and the whole city kind of shifts. not this year though, you're clear.

for clothes, the thing that gets canadians is the humidity, 18C here feels colder than 18C back home when its damp in the morning then you're sweating by 2pm. thin merino layer beats a thick hoodie. skip boots, bring broken-in sneakers plus maybe one pair you dont mind getting dirty, hongdae alleys after rain are rough.

book wise, Klook is fine for the touristy stuff but for Gyeongbokgung just pay at the gate, its like 3000 won and the line moves. the one i'd actually lock now is a hanbok rental if you want the free palace entry, good shops in the area book out on weekends.

Bring a compact umbrella, seriously. Early Oct in Seoul is right in the middle of the post-monsoon but you still get random rain days and you'll see them selling cheap ones at every convenience store for like 5 bucks when it catches people off guard. For layers, a light packable down or a fleece vest does more work than a heavy jacket since you'll be going in and out of subway stations and cafes all day.

Bookings wise, skip Klook for Gyeongbokgung and Changdeokgung, just pay at the gate. The one thing worth locking in now is Changdeokgung's Huwon (Secret Garden) tour, that's a separate timed ticket with limited slots per day and it sells out. You book it on the official palace site, not Klook. Also if you want the Nami Island or DMZ stuff those are Klook-friendly but book maybe a week out, not now.

For your specific dates, Oct 3 is Gaecheonjeol so expect some crowds at the big spots but nothing crazy, it's not Chuseok level.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 15 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
