Hi!!

Im not sure if this is a right place to post this😂 Sorry if i made a mistake and let me know.

Umm long story short, im Korean and im looking for a 1:1 English teacher in Seoul. (Jong-ro)

Ive been going to an English speaking 학원 for past few months. And i think it helped me a lot.

However, one of the problems is that this is too expensive. Really expensive for students like me.. Thats why i think it would be great if i could find a freelance English teacher! (Without the 학원 between me and the teacher, the price might be lower.. am i right?😂)

Some of my friends suggested going to a language exchange meetup, but im really introverted and not good at socializing with many people 🥹 So, that's not really an option for me even though it doesnt cost me.

Also ive tried some online classes, but they were not that helpful, and i just prefer in-person classes.

I hope i can get any tips or recommendations about finding English teacher!

Thanks!

honestly the 학원 markup is real, you can usually find freelance tutors for 25,000 to 40,000 won an hour if you look in the right spots. since you're near jongno, try posting on the "seoul language exchange" subreddit or the "hongdae free classifieds" facebook group, those are more active than you'd think for 1:1 stuff.

another thing that works well for introverts is reaching out to english teachers at small private academies in jongno, not the big chains. they often do side gigs on weekends for way less than their official rate. just ask around at places near tapgol park or insadong, some of them even prefer meeting at quiet cafes like the ones on samcheongdong slope.

if you want zero social pressure, consider a "tutor share" where you meet one other person and split the cost. you can find partners on the "seoul study buddy" naver cafe, it's less intimidating than a full meetup and you still get mostly 1:1 attention. just vet them with a quick video call first, and always pay per session until you trust them.

You're right that cutting out the 학원 middleman usually drops the price, but the tricky part is finding someone reliable. I'd suggest checking the Facebook group "English Teachers in Korea" or the "Seoul Expat" community, people post tutor listings there pretty often. Another route is to put up a notice on the bulletin board at universities like Yonsei or Hongik, a lot of exchange students or grad students are happy to do conversation practice for 20,000 to 30,000 won an hour, way cheaper than a 학원.

For Jongno specifically, try asking at cafe staff in areas like Anguk or Samcheong-dong, they sometimes know local tutors who meet clients there. Also, if you're okay with a slightly different format, some tutors offer a "walk and talk" session where you stroll around Gyeongbokgung or along Cheonggyecheon while chatting, it's less awkward than sitting face to face at a table and can feel more natural for introverts. Just make sure to do a trial session first before committing, and agree on a cancellation policy in advance.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 14 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
