should I live in Songpa or Yeongdeungpogu?

I'm a mid-twenties foreigner and I know the ~happening areas for that demographic are hongdae/itaewon. the only concern I have is that these places are overly gentrified and expensive tourist traps. I've never been to korea before so I'm not sure if these areas (or areas nearby) also have affordable hole-in-the-walls and mom & pop stores or if they're just overhyped by tourists. is it a mixed bag?

songpa seems a little quieter, but maybe less gentrified and touristy? I google maps-ed it and it's only about 45 min from yeongdeungpogu. is it more worth it to stay in songpa and then go to hongdae/itaewon/etc on weekends? songpa is close to gangnam, which seems very expensive & gentrified, but I'm just not sure.

I know gentrification is an increasingly large issue in seoul; my thinking is that if both are at the same level, I may as well go to the place that has more of the things I enjoy. I'm not super into clubbing but I love art/music & I would love to meet same-aged locals. mainly, I just want to figure out which district has the lowest ratio of bougie/gentrified things in this area to local joints/non-tourist areas. thanks in advance <3

i think you're right that songpa's quieter but the real difference is the food scene. yeongdeungpogu has those late-night spots near daerim station where you can get proper jokbal for like 15,000 won and it's all local office workers, no tourists. songpa's got good stuff too but more spread out and pricier near the lake. for meeting locals your age, yeongdeungpogu puts you closer to sinchon which is still got that student energy without being as played out as hongdae. the art scene is better in songpa though, seoul art center actually has decent programming and the galleries in bangbae are real, not just instagram photo spots

honestly songpa is great if you want to actually live somewhere chill and not feel like you're in a theme park. the area around jamsil has some solid local spots tucked between all the big malls, like the little alley behind lotte world tower where old ajummas sell tteokbokki for like 3,000 won. plus seokchon lake is nice for a walk when you need to decompress after work

yeongdeungpogu is more of a mixed bag tbh. you've got yeouido which is all office towers and chain restaurants during the day, then dead at night. but the area around times square and further into daerim has some real gritty local joints where nobody speaks english and the prices are half what you'd pay in hongdae. it's closer to the action but you'll prob still end up commuting to hongdae or sinchon for nightlife anyway since yeongdeungpogu itself isn't really a destination for people our age

if art and meeting locals is your thing i'd lean songpa. there's a decent indie music scene around suseo and the seoul art center is right there for proper gallery shows. also the subway from songpa to hongdae is like 50 minutes but it's a straight shot on line 2 so you can just zone out with headphones. yeongdeungpogu to hongdae is faster but

personally i think you're missing the point a bit with songpa vs yeongdeungpogu. neither is gonna be the next itaewon or whatever but songpa has this weirdly good underground music thing going on near suyu station that nobody talks about, tiny basement venues where bands play for free and the crowd is like 15 people and all locals. yeongdeungpogu's food scene is better for late night eating but the social scene there is mostly older office workers getting drunk after work, not really your demographic

the gentrification worry is real but it's not as binary as you think. songpa's got whole blocks near garak market that are just regular old korean neighborhoods with 30 year old restaurants and no english menus, barely touched by the gangnam money even though it's right there. you can get a full meal for like 8,000 won and sit next to grandpas watching tv. yeongdeungpogu has that too around daerim but it's more scattered and a lot of the good local spots are getting pushed out by chain cafes

if i were you i'd pick songpa and just accept that you'll commute to hongdae or sinchon for nights out. the tradeoff is you get a real neighborhood where you can actually become a regular somewhere, not just another foreigner passing through. plus the seoul art center thing is legit, they have cheap tickets for under 30s

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 15 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
