Why do customer service people in Korea have so much attitude??

Like I've worked customer service and even if it's shit I would never put in on to the customer?? I'm ordering coffee and that girl has the most attitude I've ever seen and I notice people in general*… Like I've worked customer service and even if it's shit I would never put in on to the customer?? I'm ordering coffee and that girl has the most attitude I've ever seen and I notice people in general are like that what's up with them tf

not everybody obviously, that was one of the worst incidents

ngl i think part of it is the whole "customer is god" thing is actually dying here, especially with the younger workers. they're over the whole bowing and smiling thing, it feels fake to them. so u get this dry, deadpan tone that's more like "what do u want" instead of "how can i help u" and yeah it reads as attitude.

but here's the thing, u'll notice the same energy at a lot of places that aren't even service related, like the post office or a bank. it's just the standard bluntness of how koreans talk to strangers. they're not trying to be rude, they just don't see the point in performing friendliness for a 30 second interaction.

if u really want to dodge it, go to a place where the owner is actually present, like a tiny gimbap shop or a old school dongdongju bar. the owner has a stake in u coming back so they'll actually crack a smile. also learn to say "yeogi juseyo" (here please) really clearly when u order, it cuts down on the back and forth that seems to annoy them.

idk if it's attitude exactly, more like the whole vibe here is just... flat. korean service culture is about efficiency and formality, not warmth. like the standard greeting is "hello, what would you like" and that's it, no small talk, no fake smile. it reads as rude if you're used to american style friendliness but for them it's just normal.

if u want actual friendly service, skip the chains and hit up a local spot in like ikseon-dong or mangwon. those places usually have younger owners who are more laid back. also try saying "감사합니다" with a nod when u order, it usually softens them up a bit. but honestly, even koreans complain about this, so it's not just u being sensitive.

You're probably catching the tail end of a really brutal shift, honestly. Service workers here often deal with heavy workloads and strict managers, so the warmth gets squeezed out fast, especially at chain coffee places near offices or universities. It's not that they're mad at you specifically, it's more that the job culture doesn't reward being chatty or friendly, it rewards speed and efficiency.

That said, you'll notice a huge difference if you go to a smaller, independent cafe in places like Hannam or Seongsu. The baristas there tend to be more relaxed and will actually smile or make small talk, they're not running on a timer for a franchise. If you're stuck with the big chains, your best bet is to order clearly and keep it quick, they'll appreciate it and you'll get out faster.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 14 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
