Just saw a tiktok of an American woman getting a Korean body scrub in her hometown and they were, let's just say, thorough XD.

I'm currently in Dongdaemun-gu until July 1st, so only a few more days, but was wondering if anyone knew of any spas/places that offer a service like this that may be kind to a foreigner.

I get by really well with Papago and have been using this, and all I've see are posts about Korean massages which are different than the exfoliating type of thing I'm looking for!

Lmk if you know of a place <3

(Idk if it matters, but I have tattoos and piercings none of which are "offensive")

if you're in dongdaemun just hop over to seongsu-dong and try ongnyucheon spa, it's smaller than dragon hill but way less chaotic and the ajummas there are pretty chill. i've taken a few friends there who were nervous about the whole experience and they all said it was fine, just show them your papago screen with "때밀이 해주세요" and they'll know what's up. tattoos won't be an issue, i've got a half sleeve and they just scrubbed right over it. entry plus scrub will run you about 25k won total and it's a 10 minute taxi from where you are

The place you're looking for is called a jjimjilbang with a scrub service, not a massage parlor. Sparex in Dongdaemun is right near you and they do the full body scrub (ttae-miri) for about 25,000 won on top of the entry fee. The ladies there work fast and firm, so don't be shy about using your hands to signal if they're going too hard. Tattoos and piercings are fine, they've seen everything in a place like that.

yeah you're looking for a 찜질방 (jjimjilbang) or a 스파 (spa) that has a scrub service. most of them are foreigner-friendly enough especially if you use papago. the big ones like dragon hill spa in yongsan or siloam sauna near seoul station have staff who are used to tourists and they do the full body scrub (때밀이) in the women's section. tattoos are usually fine, just don't be surprised if they point at them and ask if it hurt lol. the piercings might get a glance but they've seen it all. expect it to be around 20-30k won for the scrub on top of the entry fee

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 14 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
