Currently staying at an apartment in Chungmuro. I've already tried breakfast at a few of the nearby hotels; they allow non-guests to pay a one-off fee for a breakfast coupon. I've found that the quality and variety of food & drink on offer varies wildly - and price has no bearing on this whatsoever. I've paid 15K won for a breakfast that was superior to another elsewhere that cost 27K won.

Can anyone recommend a good hotel for breakfast? I'll eat Korean, western, anything really, I'm after somewhere with plenty of choice and good coffee. I'll happily walk 10-20mins if necessary - I love walking through Seoul and soaking up the vibe here

try the josun palace in jongno instead, it's a bit further maybe 20 min walk but you can stroll through ikseon-dong on the way which is worth it alone. their buffet is around 55K but they've got a proper barista making espresso drinks and a cold brew station, plus they do these tiny korean side dishes you don't see at other hotels, like seasoned raw crab and perilla oil jeon. i went last month and honestly the coffee alone beats most cafes in the area.

also check out the plaza hotel near city hall, it's like 25 min walk but you can hop on the subway one stop. their breakfast is 38K and they have a huge salad bar with weird stuff like grilled zucchini and pickled radish that i never find elsewhere. the pancake station is solid too, they make them fresh to order. not as fancy as josun but better value for the variety.

one thing nobody mentions, some hotels let you book breakfast through their app or a site like catchtable for like 20% off the walk-in price. worth checking before you commit to paying full at the front desk. and if you're ok with a bit of a walk, the shilla in jangchung is pricey at 65K but their dim sum section is legit, they fly in the dumpling chef from hong kong during peak season.

honestly, skip the big-name hotels and head to the Westin Chosun in Myeongdong. it's about a 15 min walk from Chungmuro, maybe less if you cut through the back streets. their buffet is like 45K won now, but the spread is massive, and the coffee's actually drinkable, which is rare for hotel buffets here. they have a good mix of Korean stuff like galbi-jjim and japchae next to proper western eggs benedict and fresh pastries.

if you want something cheaper and more local, the Ambassador Seoul in Jangchung-dong is another 10 min walk east, near the Dongguk University stop. their breakfast runs about 30K and they do a killer kimchi-jjigae station plus a made-to-order noodle bar. coffee's meh, but you can just grab a flat white from a nearby cafe after, there's a decent one right across the street.

one tip tho, most of these places ask for a passport or ID when you buy the coupon at the front desk, so bring that along. and if you're flexible on time, go after 9:30am, it's way less crowded and the food's still fresh.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 15 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
