honestly if you're just trying it out, The Climb in hongdae is pretty beginner friendly. they have auto-belay so you don't even need a partner, and the staff speaks enough english to get you sorted. its like 25,000 won for a day pass with gear rental, which is standard for seoul

downside is it gets packed after 6pm on weekdays, so go early if you can. also the routes are more bouldering focused than top rope, but they have both

If you're in Hongdae anyway, The Climb is solid for a first try. But if you want a bigger space with more top rope options, check out Climb Monster in Sangsu. It's a 10 minute walk from Sangsu Station and has way more auto-belay lanes than The Climb. Day pass with gear is 22,000 won, and they have a bouldering cave area that's pretty fun too. Weekday mornings are dead quiet, so you can basically have the place to yourself.

Climb Monster in Sangsu is solid but if you're near Gangnam, check out The Wall. It's a bit pricier around 30,000 won but the routes are way more varied and they've got a legit lead climbing section if you ever want to get into that later. Just show up with socks, they rent everything else.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
