honestly kakao taxi is just more reliable here. the driver pool is way bigger so youll get matched faster, especially outside of gangnam or hongdae where uber can take forever. plus the app has english support now which helps.

that said ubers been running some decent promos lately, 5k off is legit if you play that game. just keep in mind uber drivers are mostly the same guys running both apps so the service is identical. i'd grab the coupon and use it for a short trip but dont rely on uber for late nights or rainy days.

yeah the coupon is legit but the real difference is kakao's payment system. you can link it to your kakao pay or even pay the driver directly with card/cash if the app glitches. uber forces card payments and sometimes it doesn't process right, had a driver get annoyed once near myeongdong because the app kept failing.

also fwiw kakao's "call now" feature actually works better for finding drivers in non-touristy areas. i was out near mangwon station last week and uber showed no cars for 15 minutes, kakao had one in 3 minutes. the 5k coupon is nice for a quick ride but i'd keep kakao as your main backup

Both apps work fine but the main reason people stick with Kakao is the sheer number of drivers. Uber has maybe a third of the coverage, so on weekend nights near Itaewon or Jongno you'll be waiting 10-15 minutes versus 2-3 on Kakao. The coupon is a good deal for a daytime trip though, I'd use it for something like a ride from Gangnam to Sinsa where you won't be stuck waiting.

One thing nobody mentioned is that Uber's destination input can be finicky with Korean addresses. Kakao's search handles apartment complexes and smaller buildings much better, especially if you're typing in Korean. If you're relying on the coupon, just have the exact address or a landmark ready or you'll be correcting the route mid-drive.

the n37 bus tip is gold, i've used it more times than i can count. one thing i'd add for the hongdae crowd is that if you're into the indie scene, skip club ff and go to strange fruit instead, it's a tiny basement venue off the main drag that books local punk and shoegaze bands for like 5k won cover. the sound system is janky but the energy is way more authentic than the tourist-heavy spots. also for gangnam, the line at octagon can hit 30 minutes on weekends so get there before 11pm or just go to arena which is less crowded imo

yeah this is a really good breakdown, especially pointing out the cover charge differences which a lot of people dont think about. one thing i'd add is that if you're in hongdae and wanna avoid the cover altogether, walk a block or two off the main street towards the yeonnam-dong area, there's a strip of tiny bars like the vinyl and soju place that's basically just a dude's apartment with records, no cover and soju is like 3k won. also for gangnam, the subway stops running around midnight but the bus from gangnam station to sinsa runs all night, way easier than fighting for a taxi. the dress code tip is real though, i saw a guy get turned away from octagon for wearing air force ones once

solid write-up, the budget breakdown is spot on. one thing i'd add: if you're in gangnam and want a drinks-only spot that's more laid-back than the mega clubs, check out the speakeasy bars in the alleys off gangnam-daero. places like bar cham or le chamber have no cover and cocktails are around 15k-20k won, way better for a conversation than octagon's chaos. also, for hongdae, the street food stalls near the main exit are clutch for soaking up booze before the 4am subway start, try the tteokbokki at the cart by hongdae station exit 9.
