Also id really appreciate if anyone can DM me your experience! I'm quite the introvert but am doing this to really come out of my comfort zone and grow. Some qns I have:

1) what if one gets sick? Can we walk into any clinic and would it be expensive? 2) recommendations for solo dining? 3) any advice?

Thank you so much!! Really hope to get some replies to calm my anxiety.

yeah goshiwon walls are paper thin, i stayed in one near the sinchon rotary and could hear my neighbor practicing guitar every night lol. if that bothers u, try looking for a "one-room" in the yeonhui-dong area instead, it's a short walk from sogang and way quieter with more space for around 500k-600k a month. just use 직방 or 다방 apps to filter, most landlords speak enough english to handle a lease.

for clinics, there's a good 의원 right across from sogang's back gate on the street toward yeonhui-dong, the doctor speaks english and it's never crowded. solo dining is no issue, hit the gimbap place in sinchon station's underground shopping center, it's open late and nobody cares if you sit alone with a book. honestly just join one of the klec study groups early on, you'll get forced into talking and it helps with the anxiety way more than you think

For goshiwons near Sogang, walk up the hill past the main gate toward the engineering buildings. There's a cluster of them on the side streets around Baekhyeon-dong that are quieter than the ones right by Sinchon Station. You'll pay around 400,000 to 500,000 won a month and have a tiny room with a shared kitchen, but the isolation might actually suit you since you can control how much you socialize.

Solo dining is easy around there. Sinchon has a ton of places where you sit at a counter and order from a machine, like the gopchang alley or any of the kalguksu spots. If you want something more comfortable, walk toward the Sogang back gate and look for the small japchae and kimbap shops run by older ajummas. They're used to students eating alone and won't hover.

For the clinic question, you can walk into any 의원 (the ones with a red cross sign) and see a doctor for about 10,000 to 15,000 won without insurance. Pharmacies are literally next door and a prescription costs a few thousand more. Just bring your passport and some cash.

Sogang's back gate area has a few goshiwons tucked behind the convenience store on the corner of Yeonhui-ro. They're older buildings but the owners there tend to keep things clean and quiet, which matters more than the decor. Walk up that hill and peek in the windows, if you see a notice board with room numbers and prices posted, that's usually a good sign they're not trying to hide anything.

For getting sick, there's a pharmacy right at the Sogang back gate intersection that stays open until 10pm most nights. The pharmacist there speaks enough English to help with basic colds or stomach stuff, and they'll tell you which clinic to walk to if it's more serious. A full round of antibiotics or cold medicine usually runs under 10,000 won.

Solo dining tip: the basement food court in the Sogang student union building is open to anyone and dead cheap. You get a tray and pick from the steam table, rice and soup included for around 5,000 won. It's not fancy but nobody pays attention to you there, and you can eat in peace while people-watching. The cafeteria hours are shorter on weekends though, so keep that in mind.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 14 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
