Why do Korean taxi / uber drivers play classical music at night?

That being said, I was quick to do a google search in regard to the effects of classical music on intoxication / nausea. Since Seoul is very modern / futuristic to some degree, I thought that this thought process could have an interconnection. Unlickily google was not able to answer my questions.

Any enlightenment from the ((expat) Seoul) reddit community?

Cheers in advance 😁

honestly it's not that deep lol. taxi drivers here just find classical music calming for late night driving, helps them stay focused without being too distracting. some of the older drivers have been doing it for decades, it's more of a habit than anything scientific

there's also this thing where taxi drivers used to listen to radio programs that played classical at night, like KBS 1FM. a lot of them just kept that tradition going even after switching to their own music. you'll notice the same vibe in some 24 hour cafes or convenience stores around gangnam at 3am

if you're feeling carsick though, try sitting in the front seat next time. the back makes it worse with all the weaving through hongdae traffic

You've hit on something a lot of newcomers notice. It's less about nausea and more about the radio landscape here. KBS Classic FM is basically the default for many older drivers, especially after 9 or 10pm when the talk shows end.

I've asked a few drivers about it over the years. The honest answer is usually that it keeps them alert without getting them hyped up, and it's just what they've always done. You'll also hear it in some of the older jjimjilbangs and even certain convenience stores in Jongno late at night.

If you want a change of scenery, most drivers are happy to switch to a different station or plug in your own phone. Just ask nicely.

yeah it's pretty common here, not just taxis either. some drivers say it helps them stay calm in traffic and not get road rage lol. also a lot of older drivers just grew up with classical on the radio so it stuck

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
