Class timetables and curriculums for courses at Seoul National University - do they differ from abroad in your experience and are they organized well?

Where I study a there's a very clear course curriculum available from before the course even starts, organizing the content of every lecture with dates given for all the tests, assignments and lectures during the course.

If that isn't the case at SNU how do you organize your studying and your days, potential travels to visit family if you don't know when a test is coming up until a week beforehand? Is it true that this is the case for all courses or does it depend on the subject/orientation? Thanks in advance!

fwiw i think it varies way more by professor than by department at SNU. some profs hand out a full semester schedule with every quiz date on day one, others treat the syllabus like a vague suggestion. i had a friend in business who got a midterm date changed three times over email, which was annoying

for family trips, i'd look into the SNU academic calendar PDF they release before each semester. it lists the official exam periods and major holidays, so even if individual profs shift things by a few days, you know the general weeks. KTX cancellations are pretty forgiving too, like you can cancel up to an hour before departure and get most of your money back

one thing that helped me was joining the SNU student facebook group for my year. people post about which profs are strict about attendance or have surprise quizzes, so you can plan around that. also some classes have "replacement lectures" on saturdays if the prof cancels a weekday class, which is a thing that caught me off guard my first semester

It really depends on the department and the professor. In engineering and natural sciences at SNU, you're more likely to get a detailed syllabus with test dates on day one, similar to what you're used to. But in humanities or social sciences, I've had friends who got their midterm announced just two weeks before, which is stressful.

For trips home, I'd just book refundable tickets early or plan around the midterm period in mid-October and finals in December. Those windows are pretty consistent even if the exact date shifts. Seoul Station has good lockers if you need to stash luggage while waiting for a last-minute KTX ticket.

honestly it's not as bad as people make it sound. most SNU professors post a syllabus with at least the midterm and final weeks on the first day, especially in stem fields. the real chaos is with smaller assignments or presentations that get announced with like a week's notice, but that's pretty common at Korean unis in general

for planning travel, just book around the official midterm and final exam periods. they're usually the same weeks across the whole uni, like mid october for fall midterms and early december for finals. KTX refunds are actually decent if you cancel a day before, so i wouldn't stress too much about exact dates changing by a day or two

one thing nobody told me is that some classes have "attendance checks" that aren't on the syllabus. like a random pop quiz or having to submit something in person. those can mess with spontaneous trips but you learn which profs do that pretty fast. just ask upperclassmen in your department when you get there

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 15 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
