3 days in Seoul - DMZ tour worth it?

Very excited to explore this city, and sad only have 3 days! Is it worth spending one of these days for the DMZ tour (which from what I've read online basically takes out a whole day)? Is there much to see / do on the DMZ tour? Or is a day better spent exploring Seoul / hiking in the hills and visiting temples?

Appreciate this is subjective, but grateful for thoughts!

with only 3 days i'd skip the dmz honestly. not because it's bad but because seoul has so much packed into small areas you can actually walk between. take the sunday and do a loop from gwanghwamun square past the palace to samcheongdong, grab a bowl of kalguksu at one of the noodle alley spots near insadong, then hike up to bukhansan if you have energy left. the view from baegundae peak is legit and you'll be back down by dinner time

if you're really curious about the dmz stuff, the third tunnel tour is basically a walk through a damp concrete tunnel that ends at a barred gate. it's interesting but not "use one of your three days" interesting. plus the dmz area is strict about what you can bring and where you can point your camera, feels more like a controlled experience than exploration

one thing i haven't seen mentioned is that seoul's nightlife is worth experiencing on a short trip too. instead of a 7am bus to the border, sleep in a little and wander hongdae or yeonnam late afternoon, grab some tteokbokki from a street cart, then hit a norebang with friends. that's the kind of memory that sticks more than staring at a flagpole through binoculars

Three days is tight and the DMZ tour will eat your entire Saturday or Sunday. The bus leaves from central Seoul around 7am and you won't be back until late afternoon, plus the whole thing feels like a guided procession through checkpoints and gift shops. I'd rather spend that Saturday morning at Gyeongbokgung Palace, then walk through the back alleys of Seochon to find a good bowl of kongguksu at a place like Onjium.

If you really want a glimpse of the border tension, take the subway to Imjingak station on the Gyeongui Line, it's about 90 minutes from Seoul Station and you can see the Freedom Bridge and the steam locomotive with bullet holes without any tour booking. You'll be back in Hongdae by lunchtime with 15000 won spent on transit instead of 80000 won on a tour bus.

dmz is a bucket list checkbox but not a great use of 72 hours in seoul. the real value of this city is how you can go from a 600 year old palace to a neon-lit karaoke room in a 15 minute walk, and the dmz tour just pulls you out of that completely.

if you want something that gives you the same "wow this is intense" feeling without the bus ride, try the seoul city wall trail. start at naksan park around sunset, you get these sweeping views over the old city and the modern skyline at the same time, and the wall itself has been standing since the 1300s. takes about 2 hours to do the naksan to hyehwa section and you end up in daehangno which has great theatre street energy at night.

just be aware that monday is when a lot of museums are closed, so plan your saturday around the big indoor spots like the national museum if that matters to you. sundays are fine for everything else.

The place was PACKED, like seriously wall-to-wall people. I managed to snag a spot at the bar and ordered their legendary spicy soy garlic wings, holy moly, they were incredible. The crunch, the flavor...it was a flavor explosion. But here's the thing: I saw the owner, this super chill dude, whispering to a staff member about some "special sauce." I'm dying to know... what's the secret ingredient in that insane sauce?!
arrow_drop_up 15 arrow_drop_down

the whispering thing is real but its not about the sauce lol. that guy runs a 2am handoff with the chicken supplier, they drop off fresh birds from a farm near Chuncheon three times a week instead of using the frozen stuff most hongdae spots rely on. thats why the texture hits different, not the sauce itself. if u go back ask for the neck & wing combo off menu, its cheaper & honestly the best cut they do

arrow_drop_up 24 arrow_drop_down

the thing nobody mentions is that Dogdogdog's sauce gets its body from cheong, the Korean rice syrup, not sugar. thats why it coats the wing so thick and stays glossy instead of going sticky. i asked a guy who worked there and he said they also add a splash of maesil (plum) extract at the end off the heat. that fruity tang under the garlic is what you're tasting. go on a weekday before 6, weekends the wait hits 40 min easy.

honestly the "secret sauce" thing is prob just marketing. every fried chicken place in Seoul has a version of that story. the real difference at Dogdogdog is they double fry in rice bran oil and toss the wings in the sauce twice, once right out of the fryer and again after a 30 sec rest. thats where the crunch comes from, not some mystery ingredient. if u wanna taste the actual base, order the banban half plain half spicy and dip the plain one in the spicy sauce yourself.
