🥟 Must-Try Pierogi Spots
Pierogi are Poland's comfort food, and Gdansk does them exceptionally well. At Pierogarnia Mandu (ul. Elżbietańska 4/8), you can watch them being made by hand and try creative fillings like duck with cranberry; expect to pay around 25-35 PLN for a generous portion. For a more traditional take, head to Bar Mleczny Neptun (ul. Długa 33/34), a milk bar serving classic pierogi ruskie for about 15 PLN. Both places are open daily from around 11:00 to 20:00, but arrive early to avoid queues.

🐟 Fresh Fish by the Coast
Being on the Baltic coast, Gdansk excels in fresh fish dishes. In the Old Town, try Tawerna Mestwin (ul. Straganiarska 20/23) for perfectly grilled cod or herring with a view of the Motława River; mains range from 40 to 60 PLN. For a more casual experience, visit the fish stalls at Hala Targowa (Plac Dominikański 1) where you can get fried halibut or cod for around 20-30 PLN. Most places serve from noon until 21:00, and the lunch specials (12:00-16:00) offer great value.

🥨 Street Food and Snacks
Gdansk's street food scene is vibrant, especially around the Old Town and Wrzeszcz. At the Saturday morning market in Wrzeszcz (ul. Waryńskiego 1), you'll find oscypek (smoked sheep cheese) grilled with cranberry for 10-15 PLN, and fresh obwarzanek for 3 PLN. For a quick bite, try the zapiekanka stalls near the main train station (Gdańsk Główny) where a loaded zapiekanka costs 12-18 PLN. These stalls typically operate from 10:00 to 18:00, but hours vary by vendor.

🍲 Hearty Polish Classics
For a taste of traditional Polish cuisine, visit Karczma Młyńska (ul. Młyńska 3) near the Motława, where you can try bigos (hunter's stew) for 28 PLN or żurek (sour rye soup) for 22 PLN. Another favorite is Kubicki (ul. Wartka 5), a historic restaurant serving dishes like pork knuckle and potato pancakes since 1918; mains are 45-70 PLN. Both places are open daily from noon to 22:00, and reservations are recommended on weekends.

🍰 Sweet Treats and Cafes
Gdansk has a sweet tooth, and you'll find excellent pastries and desserts across the city. At Piekarnia Pellowski (ul. Szeroka 32), try the warm szneka z glance (yeast bun with crumble) for 5 PLN, or indulge in a slice of sernik (cheesecake) at Cafe Kamienica (ul. Mariacka 37) for 15 PLN. For ice cream, head to Lody u Lodziarza (ul. Długa 45) where a scoop costs 8 PLN; they're open from 11:00 to 21:00 in summer. Many cafes also serve excellent hot chocolate during colder months.

🍺 Local Drinks and Bars
To wash down your meal, try a glass of local beer like Żywiec or a shot of Goldwasser, a traditional Gdańsk liqueur with gold flakes. At Brovarnia Gdańska (ul. Szafarnia 9), a brewpub on the waterfront, a pint of craft beer costs 15-20 PLN, and they offer food pairings. For a cozy evening, visit Pub Red Light (ul. Piwna 28/31) for cocktails and live music; drinks range from 20 to 35 PLN. Most bars are open until midnight or later on weekends.

🛒 Markets and Food Halls
For a one-stop food experience, head to Hala Targowa (Plac Dominikański 1), a historic market hall open Monday to Saturday from 7:00 to 18:00. Here you can buy fresh produce, smoked meats, and regional cheeses at reasonable prices. Another gem is the Gdańsk Food Hall (ul. Wałowa 25) in the Shipyard area, where you'll find food stalls offering everything from ramen to tacos, with dishes from 20 to 40 PLN. It's open daily from noon to 22:00 and often hosts live events.

💡 Practical Eating Tips
Most restaurants in Gdansk accept card payments, but it's wise to carry some cash for smaller stalls and milk bars. Lunch specials (called zestaw dnia) are a great deal, often costing 20-30 PLN for a two-course meal, available from 12:00 to 16:00 on weekdays. Tipping is customary: round up the bill or leave 10% for good service. If you have dietary restrictions, learn a few phrases like 'bez mięsa' (without meat) or 'bez glutenu' (gluten-free) to communicate clearly.

solid list. only thing id change is pierogarnia u mamy on piwna, cheaper than mandu & the ruskie are just as good. also goldwasser comes in tiny bottles at most żabka shops if u dont wanna commit to a whole bar

The guide nails Mandu, but I'd add Bar Przystań in Brzeźno for fried flounder right by the pier, around 30 PLN. Also, most milk bars close by 17:00, not 20:00, so don't plan a late lunch there.

went last summer & Mandu was packed even at opening, so go right at 11. skip the riverside spots for a proper flądra, the little smażalnia in Brzeźno near the pier does it better for half the price

For budget meals, try Bar Mleczny Neptun (ul. Długa 33/34) with mains 15-25 zł, open 8:00-20:00. For traditional Polish dishes, go to Kubicki (ul. Wartka 5) near the river, mains 40-60 zł. Look for the 'Gdańsk Card' (from 70 zł for 24 hours) which includes museum entry and transport. Eat at milk bars (bar mleczny) for cheap, hearty meals. Tap water is safe to drink, so carry a refillable bottle.

For nightlife, head to ulica Piwna for craft beer bars like Labeerynt (ul. Piwna 53) or cocktail bars on ulica Chmielna. In summer, enjoy open-air concerts at the Neptune Fountain. Most bars close around 1:00 AM on weekends.

📅 Best Time to Visit
June to August offers warm weather (18-25°C) and long days, but crowds are heavy; book accommodation early. May and September are quieter with mild temperatures and lower prices. Winter (December to February) brings Christmas markets and festive lights, but temperatures drop to -5°C. Avoid late October and November when many attractions have reduced hours. the 72h ztm ticket is a good shout but honestly for 3 days u barely use it, day 1 is all walkable. one thing missing: the WW2 museum, way better than i expected & worth half a day if u can squeeze it

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

solid plan, but day 2 is packed. the tram 8 to Oliwa alone eats an hour each way and the organ concert is only a few minutes long. if u want the shipyard stuff, do the free walking tour from under the Złota Brama instead, it covers Solidarity better than paying 30 zł. also skip Westerplatte ferry if ur short on time, its mostly rubble and a long walk. brzeźno pier at sunset is the real highlight tbh

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

Piwna 47 closed, try Gdański Bowke on Długie Pobrzeże
