Best way to pay in Manila 2026 as a foreigner?

Is it worth opening a local bank account, or can I get by with a foreign card and GCash? I've heard GCash is basically essential but I'm not sure if tourists can set it up easily.

for a few months a local account is probably overkill unless ur renting long term & need to pay a landlord by transfer. most places in metro manila take cards now, even sari-sari stores do qr ph. bring a visa or mastercard that doesnt charge foreign fees & withdraw from a big bank atm like bpi or bdo, they cap the fee around 200 pesos. hsbc atm near makati ave is another option

Agree, though BDO caps at 250 now, not 200.

arrow_drop_up 13 arrow_drop_down

250 sounds high tbh, thought it was still 200 at most bdo machines

BDO's 250 applies to foreign cards, 200 for local ones.

Sari-sari stores taking cards is a stretch, plenty still want cash for small stuff so keep coins on you. And the ATM fee hits your card on top of whatever your bank charges, so withdraw bigger amounts less often.

GCash needs an ACR I-card, not a tourist visa.

Maya works better for tourists since the eKYC accepts a passport, unlike GCash. Load it at a 7-Eleven and you can scan QR Ph anywhere. Keep a backup card though, since Maya sometimes flags foreign numbers.

the passport eKYC is the real trick, but verify with your hotel address since a rejected selfie means waiting a day to retry

just keep some cash on u too since plenty of spots still go cash only, & top up ur phone data before u try the ekyc selfie

Manila food court prices 2026: what should tourists pay?

What's the real rate for a basic meal there in 2026, and how much should I expect to be quoted vs what I should actually hand over?
arrow_drop_up 6 arrow_drop_down

last time i was in Manila a rice meal at a food center ran me 90 to 120 pesos. if they quote you 250+ thats the tourist markup, so just point at the posted price and hand over exact change.

arrow_drop_up 3 arrow_drop_down

Yeah, posted price or walk. Same at Quiapo stalls.

arrow_drop_up 2 arrow_drop_down

true at quiapo & the palengke stalls too, always pay from ur loose change so they see u already have exact money

arrow_drop_up 1 arrow_drop_down

honestly i've only been there as a visitor so can't give u a local rate, but i remember basic meals at those food centers running around 80 to 150 pesos. if a vendor quotes way higher just walk to the next stall, teh menus are usually posted anyway.
